In this lesson (well more an Information sheet) I will be giving you an A to Z of herbs/plants and minerals used in magick. Obviously this is a general list and I will update it as time goes on. The herbs listed will have there main uses, planetary ruler, element and whether it is masculine or feminine.
The masculine herbs are generally have more strong and fiery vibrations whilst the feminine herbs are more subtle and softer in there effect.
From this list you can choose herbs to use in potions, incense, oils and powders to achieve your desire results e.g. protection, banishment.
A Aloe- Aloe is feminine, it is ruled by the moon and its element is in the element of water. The magickal qualities of the plant are protection, success and peace. Aloe is excellent for its healing qualities as well. It can be used on skin wounds such as cuts to help kill bacteria in the wound and also to cool down burns! Also the juice of aloe is good for your digestive system.
Amaranth (cockscomb) - This is a feminine herb and is ruled by Saturn. It is under the fire element! This herb when used magickally helps repair broken hearts so it is good to use in some love spells/ ritual. A way to use this herb is to create a pouch/amulet of it and carry it with you or sleep with it under your pillow! It was once also said to bestow invisibility
Angelica- This is masculine and ruled by Venus. Its element is fire. It is used for protection and exorcism. Carry the herb with you in an amulet or burn the dried leaves during exorcism.
Anise- A masculine plant ruled by the moon/Jupiter and is of the air element. It is used in purification and protection and brings awareness and joy.
Apple- a feminine, water element ruled by Venus. It is used in love spells and good luck charms. Apple is very good for making magickal wands.
Ash- a masculine plant, ruled by the sun in the element of water. It is protective. It can be used to make healing wands and cleansing brooms. The leaves put under a pillow will help induce intuitive dreams. Also the leaves bestow good luck and fortune if worn around the neck in a pouch/bag
B Balm of Gilead- This feminine plant ruled by Saturn under the element water. Is used to help broken hearts and can be used in love and protection spells.
Basil- It is ruled by mars and is masculine. It is under the element fire. This herb is protective, used for love and it is sad that if you carry it in your wallet or purse, wealth comes to you. It can help heal relationships.
Bay laurel-A masculine plant ruled by Saturn, under the element fire. It is herb of wisdom and a protector. It helps bring forth psychic power and it ejects negative energy.
Benzoin-Under the element of air this masculine plant ruled by the sun is a good purifier and preservative. Often used as a base for incenses and is good for purifying incense.
Betony- A masculine plant, its element is fire and it is ruled by Jupiter. The magickal properties of this plant are from protection and purification, stuffed in a pillow it can prevent nightmares.
C Caraway-A masculine plant ruled by mercury, its element air. Its properties are purification and passion. Used in love charms it attracts lovers in the more physical aspect.
Carnation-This is a masculine plant ruled by the sun. Its element is fire. Worn by witches in times of persecution. In incense it adds power and energy during ritual work.
Catnip-A feminine plant ruled by Venus, its element is water. Its properties are connected with cat magick, familiars, friendship, love and joy. In incense it can be used to consecrate magickal tools.
Camomile-Ruled by the sun and Venus this plant is masculine and its element is water. This is a good thing to use in incense for meditation. Also use or centering and ringing an atmosphere of peace. Sprinkle in the hoe for protection, money and healing. An incredibly calming herb.
Celandine- ruled by the sun and in the element fire this masculine herb helps alleviates depression and when worn as an amulet help the wearer escape unfair imprisonment or entrapment.
Cinquefoil-Masculine and ruled by Jupiter. Its element is earth. Hang it from your door to protect against negativity. Used for purification, prosperity and protection.
Cinnamon- this plant is masculine and is under the fire element and ruled by the sun. It helps you on spiritual quests. augmenting power, love, success, psychic work, healing and cleansing. It is used in incense for healing, clairvoyance and high spiritual vibration. It is good for use in anointing oil.
Clove- Masculine and ruled by the sun. Its element is fire. Worn as an amulet or charm it dispels negativity and binds those who speak ill of you. Threaded onto red string cloves can be used as a protective charm. It can help with money matters, visions, cleaning and purification.
Clover-this masculine plant is of the Air element and ruled by mercury. It is associated with the triple goddess. It’s used in rituals for beauty, youth, healing injuries and help to cure madness. The four leaf clover has been a symbol of luck for many years and also it is ad that the owner of a four leaf clover will be able see fairies!
Comfrey- This is a feminine plant ruled by Saturn its element is water. It honours the crone aspect of the goddess and is useful for casting spells to do with money and healing.
Coriander-this masculine, fire element plant ruled y mars is a protector of the home and promotes peace. It encourages longevity and is useful in love spells.
Cowslip- Feminine and ruled by Venus this plant under water is said to bring luck in love. It helps us contact departed loved ones during dreams. A woman who washes her face in milk infused with this herb will bring her lover to her.
Cypress-This masculine plant, ruled by Saturn, under the element earth is connected with death. Often used to consecrate ritual tools and can be used a preservative.
D Daisy-A feminine, water element ruled by Venus. If you hang this in your home on midsummer’s eve it will bring happiness to your home! Daises are worn at midsummers to bring luck and blessings. The daisy chain comes from the tradition of maidens picking daisies and forming them into chains to attract there beloved.
Dandelion- This masculine plant ruled by Jupiter is under the Air element. Magickally t is used for divination and communication.
Dill-This plant is of the fire element, it is masculine and ruled by Mercury. It is used in love charms and hung in children’s rooms it protects against evil spirits and bad dreams.
Dragon’s blood- This is masculine, ruled by mars and of the element fire. Dragons blood is a type of palm, it is widely used in love, protection and purification spells. Generally in its resin form. Dragons blood is excellent for making magickal inks and makes incense more potent. A piece of the plant carried with you is said to bring good luck and a piece under the bed is said to cure impotency.
E
Elder-A feminine plant ruled Venus and the element air. Elder is used to make wands and burning elder is said to be bad luck! Hanging the leaves around the door of your home will protect you from negativity.
Elecampane-A masculine plant ruled by Mercury and the element earth. It’s excellent for meditation and for requesting the presence of spirits.
Eucalyptus-A feminine plant ruled by the moon and the element air. It is used in healing charms, spells and rituals. Putting the leaves around a blue candle will enhance healing energies.
Eyebright- A masculine plant ruled by the sun and air. Anoint your eyelids daily with an infusion of the leaves and it will help to bring clairvoyant visions and prophetic dreams.
F
Fennel-A masculine plant ruled by mercury and fire. The seeds are used to promote prosperity, in money charms and to ward of evil spirits. The plant is used mainly for purification and protection.
Fern-Feminine and rued by the element air and Saturn. This plant is a powerful protector and grown near your home will ward off negativity.
Frankincense-A masculine herb under the ruler ship of the sun and fire. Its is a purifier of ritual spaces and one of the most powerful aids to meditation there is.
G Gardenia- Feminine and ruled by the moon and the element water. Used in moon incense, it attracts good spirits to rituals and enhances love vibrations.
Garlic- This herb is masculine ruled b mars and fire. It protects, heals and promotes courage.
Ginger-This herb is masculine it is ruled by mars and fire. It encourages power and success especially those concerning love and financial dealings. It is a god base for spells as it enhances vibrations.
Ginseng- Masculine and ruled by the sun and fire. It aids love and lust and will help to enhance beauty. It can also help reduce stress.
H Hawthorn- Masculine and ruled by the mars and fire. It’s used in protective sachets. I can enforce celibacy and chastity. It can promote happiness in marriage and other relationships.
Hazel-This is a masculine tree it is ruled by the sun and the element air. It is excellent for making magickal wands, and is the only wood which should be used for divining rods/wands. It promotes good luck and prosperity when bound with red and gold thread.
Holly-Masculine and ruled by mars and fire. Holly anted around the home will protect from evil. Holly water protects young children and when thrown at wild animals, is said to calm them. The berries and leaves carried by a man will help him attract his love.
Honeysuckle-Feminine and ruled by Jupiter and earth. It brings good luck when planted outside the home. It’s also used in prosperity spells and love hams and will heighten psychic abilities.
Hops-A masculine plant ruled by mars and water, it helps aid sleep and is used in healing.
Hyssop-Masculine and ruled by Jupiter and ire. The plant was used widely in the middle ages for purification, cleansing and consecration rituals. It is used in purification baths and for protective and banishing spells. In incense it is best to use it as an essential oil.
I
Ivy- A masculine plant ruled by Saturn and water. The house it grows upon it protects against harm and evil. In old traditions, ivy and holly were given to newlyweds to bring good luck.
J
Jasmine-This is a feminine plant ruled by Jupiter and earth. It attracts men and has been used for this purpose by women throughout history.
Juniper- This is a masculine plant ruled by the sun and fire. It gives protection against accidents, harm and thefts. The dried berries worn as a cam bracelet can attract lovers. Juniper can also break hexes and curses.
L
Lavender- A masculine plant ruled by mercury and air. It is a very useful herb and can be used for healing, promoting good wishes and sleep and also to attract men.
Lemon balm- Feminine and ruled by the moon/Neptune and the element water. It is a powerful aphrodisiac, promote fertility and can be used as an anti depressive especially at the end of a relationship.
Lemon verbena-Feminine and ruled by Venus and air. Used in love charms and to promote youth, beauty and attractiveness to the opposite sex. Wearing it around your neck or putting it under your pillow will drive away bad dreams. It is also a good healer for wounds.
Lilac-Feminine and ruled by Venus and air. This plant is a good protector and banishes negativity and can be used for exorcism rituals.
Linden- Feminine and ruled by Jupiter and water. It is said to be the tree of immortality and is connected with love, traction and longevity. It will also help against intoxication.
Lovage- Masculine and ruled by the sun and water. The dried, powered root is used in purification and cleansing baths to release negativity. Carry it to attract love and also when meeting new people.
M
Mandrake- A masculine plant ruled by mercury and earth. It is used in incense for increasing sex drive.
Marigold-Masculine and ruled by the sun and fire. Marigold helps with the following. Prophecy, legal matters, psychic powers, seeing magickal creatures, love ,divination dreams, business/legal affairs and renewing personal energy. This plant should be gathered at noon.
Marjoram-Masculine and ruled by mercury and air. It protects against evil ad aids love and healing. It also helps those who are grieving.
Meadowsweet-Feminine and ruled by Jupiter and water. This is a sacred herb of the druids and gives protection against negative influences. It also promotes love, balance and harmony. Place this plant on your alter when doing love spells/rituals/ charms and worn on Lammas it will help you join with the goddess.
Mint (peppermint and spearmint) - A masculine plant ruled by mercury/Venus and the element air. A good offering for spirits. It also promote healing, he ability to gain money and for successful travel. It calms the stomach and also emotions.
Mugwort- A feminine plant ruled by Venus and air. This herb promotes psychic ability and used to give prophetic dreams. Also a very good aid in astral projection.
Mullein-Masculine and ruled by Saturn and fire. This is used for courage and protection (from wild animals and evil spirits). It can be used for cleansing and purifying ritual tools and alters. Also for the cleansing of psychic and scared places before working there. It can be used to protect against nightmares and can be used as a substitute for graveyard dust!
Myrrh-A feminine plant that is ruled by the moon/Jupiter and water. It is purifying and protective and is good to use with frankincense.
Myrtle-Feminine and ruled by Venus and water. Myrtle was the sacked herd of Aphrodite and has been used in love spells and charms throughout history. Myrtle tea drank daily will enhance youthfulness and the plant grown in the house will promote luck!
N
Nettle-Masculine and ruled by mars and fire, it promotes courage and guards against danger.
Nutmeg-A feminine plant ruled by Jupiter and air. It can help to develop clairvoyance and psychic powers. Use with green candles it helps prosperity and is also said to help teething in infants.
O
Oak-Masculine and ruled by the sun and fire. It is an effective wood for wands especially power wands. It also protects against evil.
Orange- A feminine plant ruled by Jupiter and the element of water, it is used for love charms and in the orient it is used for good luck.
Orris root- A feminine plant ruled by Venus and water. The powder can be used to make you more attractive to the opposite sex. It can be used for protection also. Also it can be used as a pendulum.
P
Parsley-A masculine plant ruled by mercury and by air. Used to ward off evil. This herb can be used in purification baths as way to ward off misfortune.
Patchouli-A feminine plant rued by Saturn and earth. This plant can be used to attract lovers and can be used in fertility talismans. Also a substitute for graveyard dirt. When used with green candles it ensures prosperity and sprinkle over you money will make it go further.
Pennyroyal-A masculine plant ruled b mars and the element fire. It is used for purification and prevents weariness during long travels. It also makes a good insect repellent but should be avoided completely whilst pregnant!
Pepper (black)-Another masculine plant ruled by mars and fire it can be used in charms against the evil eye and mixed with salt it’s a good protector.
Pimpernel-A masculine plant ruled by mars and the element air. When worn as an amulet it stops people from deceiving you and it also wards off illness and accidents. The juice is used to purify and empower ritual tools.
Pine-Masculine and ruled by mars and the element of air it helps you to focus and when burnt it will cleanse the atmosphere. The sawdust is used in incenses, particularly those designed to bring money.
Poppy-this plant is feminine and ruled by the moon and water. The seeds are used in fertility, love and prosperity spells, rituals, charms.
R
Rose-Feminine and ruled by Venus and water. Rose is largely used in good luck and love workings. Rose will also help speed things along e.g. “fast luck” mixtures and is an excellent calmer in times of difficulty and stress.
Rosemary-A masculine plant ruled by the sun and fire. It’s an excellent purifier and protector. Its can be used t cleanse your hands before doing magickal workings. It also helps improve memory and aids sleep. Hug in your doorway it is said to deter thieves.
Rowan- A masculine plant ruled by the sun and fire. The wood is used for divining rods and wands. The leaves and bark are used in divination rituals. It can also be used for protection, good luck and healing.
Rue-Masculine and ruled by the sun and fire. Protective and also used in reversing curses, as it can send the energy back to the person responsible. Used to clear and cleanse the mind of emotional clutter it is also an excellent purifier for ritual spaces and tools.
S
Saffron-Masculine and ruled by the sun and fire. It is used in rituals to honour the moon goddess Ashtoreth. It dispels melancholy, cleanses the hands before healing rituals and can be used in prosperity incenses.
Sage-Ruled by Jupiter/Venus and air this masculine plant promotes financial gain and good wishes. It is also a good healer and protector.
St Johns wort-A masculine plant ruled by the sun and fire. It protects against bad dreams and gives the strength of will to do something difficult.
Sandalwood- A feminine plant ruled y the moon and air. This plant has a high spiritual vibration and is an excellent all round incense to use in magickal workings. It clears negativity, so is good for protection, purification and healing.
Sunflower-Masculine and ruled by the sun and fire. The seeds of the plant aid fertility whilst the plant can help you discover the truth if you sleep with it under your bed.
T
Thyme-Feminine and ruled by the planet Venus and the element of water. It guards against negativity and when mixed with marjoram is a good cleanser. It also helps with developing psychic powers.
V
Valerian-This plant I feminine and ruled by Venus and the water element. It protects you from negativity and promotes love. It is also an excellent inducer of sleep!
Vanilla-Feminine and ruled by Venus and water, the bean is used as a love charm d the oil is used as an attracter. Min with sugar to make love infusion.
Vervain- Feminine and ruled by Venus and the earth element. This herb is good for cleansing ritual space, cleansing baths and purification incense. Hung over the bed it prevents nightmares. It brings good luck and inspiration so is good used in workings dealing with prosperity. It is also used in love and protection charms and can insure fidelity in a partner.
Violet-This plant is feminine and ruled by Venus and the element water. It can bring changes in luck and fortune. Mixed with lavender it makes a powerful love charm. A violet and lavender compress will help ease headaches. The flower when carried on your person will calm, relax, sooth and clear the mind with its scent.
W
Walnut-Masculine and ruled by the sun and fire. Worn as a charm it promotes fertility and strengthens the heart. Also know to attract lightening.
Willow- This tree is feminine and ruled by the moon and the element water. Willow wands are used in healing and are at its strongest during a new moon, it also guards against evil.
Wormwood-Masculine and ruled by mars and air. Note to all wormwood is poisonous! It is used in smudge sticks (more on that later), gaining protection from wandering spirits. It can help free the dead from this plain of existence so they may find peace. Other uses are divination and clairvoyance incense, initiation rites and test of courage and also used with sandalwood in incense to summon spirits.
Y
Yarrow- Feminine and ruled by Venus and the element water. It is used in incense for incantations, divination and love spells. It exorcises evil and dispels negativity. It also aids in developing psychic ability. Yarrow tea drunk before divination will enhance your perceptiveness, adding peppermint to the brew will also add power to it! It is also used in courage, love and marriage charms.
Yucca-Masculine and ruled by mars and fire! Yucca helps with shapeshfting. It is said that tying a leaf of it around your head and then the animal is visualised the wearer will take on the qualities of that animal. It is also used to purify the body before workings. To get rid of illness, bathe in the suds of the boiled plant juices.
Right there we go! A basic list to start with but it will get bigger as the weeks go on. As I will be adding more specific things. Any please read and digest. Also remember this course is to help you learn about these plants, I don’t expect you to go running off and finding them. But if you do get the chance have a good time experimenting with them and have fun!
