Lighter or match
Light the lighter or strike the match. While hovering your hand near the flames, chant: "Hephaestus, god of fire, I beg thee to help me control this element of destruction. So mote it be."
Try various hand gestures to manipulate the size of the flame. Repeat all steps until a change in the flame's size occurs.
This more than likely won't work, at least not due to any magic. Moving your hand so close to aflame may manipulate it slightly, but it's going to be the result of air currents.
Korishamason, that is somewhat true. Magick is used to manipulate nature on this plane. Humans cannot control fire with a flick of the wrist anyways, so this is fake. It will only work if you flicked your wrist and it fanned air towards the flame but thats it.
Fire can be used as an elemental symbol. It can be utilized in magic to draw on the things that fire does and represents like light and warmth as protection, representing active will or passion, inspiration, cleansing (burning away impurities, strengthening through heat/tempering), transformation (particularly burning away the physical to release it into the spiritual) and destruction.
'Manipulating' fire is a mis-understanding of concepts. In magic, fire is used in it not affected by it. Changing, shaping, making, controlling, these things are not achieved by magic.
As an aside, Haphaestus' relation to fire is pretty tertiary when compared to his associations to metallurgy and crafting. He used fire to craft, and became associated with volcanoes because that is where he worked as he could utilize the (for the time) mortally unattainable heat in his work. Presumably allowing what he made to be more godly/better. The closes he comes to actually being a fire God is in the idea that eruptions were blamed on his work at the forge. He did not directly embody manipulate or represent fire itself so I don't think granting purview over fire would be under his proverbial umbrella.
