    What is it: Cinnamon
    Other names:
    Latin: Cinnamomum zeylanicum
Folk names: Sweet Wood, Clylon cinnamon.
    Gender: Masculine
    Planet: Sun
    Element: Fire
    Deities: Venus, Aphridite

Powers: Spirituality, success, Healing, Power, Psychic Powers, Lust, Protection, Love.

Ritual Uses: Cinnamon oil was used as part of holy anointiong oil by the ancient Hebrews. Acnient Roman temples were decorated by cinnamon tree leaves woven into wreaths. Cinnamoin oil was used during the mummification process by the Egyptians.

Magical Uses: When burned as an incense, made into a schet or made into an infusion, cinnamon raises high spiritual vibrations, draws money, aids in healing and stimulates psychic powers: and produces protective vibrations.

Where does it come from: Cinnamon is a small evergreen tree 10-15m tall, tleonging to the family Lauraceae, native to Sri Lanka and Southern India. The learves are ovate-oblong in shape, 7-18 cm long. The flowers which are arranged in panicles, have a geenish soulour and a rather disagreeable odour. The bruit is a purple 1 cm berry containing a single seed.

Cinnamon is harvested by growing the tree for 2 years and then coppicing it. The next year a dozen or so shoots will form from the roots. These shoots are then stripped of their bark and left to dry. Only the thin (0.5 mm) inner bark is used; the outer woodry protion is removed, leaving metre long cinnamon strips which curl into rolls on drying; each dried quill comprises strips from numerous shoots packed together. These quills are then cut to 5-10 cm long pieces for sale.

It's flavour is due to an aromatic oil which it contains to the extent of from 0.5 to 1%. This essential oil is prepared by roughly pounding the bark, macerating it in sea-water and then qucickly distilling the whole. The pungent taste and scent come from cinnamic aldehyde or cinnamaldehyde and, by the absorption of oxygen as it ages, it darkens in colour and develops resinous compounds. Commonly used as a spice.

Can be used medically to treat Heartburn, heavy menstration, peptic ulce, poor appetite and yeast infection.

    Magical uses:

    Clairvoyance Brew
    3 Parts Rose petals
    1 part cinnamon
    1 part nutmet
    1 part bay
    1 part mugwort

Place in teapot, fill w/ boining water, let steep, covered for a few min. Remove cover, sniff steam (not so that you burn our nose) for a few moments, visualize the mystic scent opening your psychic awaremess, then lie down and prophesize. If you wish, drink a bit of the bre as well, and let the stam continue to rise as you stretch your psychic awaremess.

    Chalcedony

    Energy: Receptive
    Planet: Moon
    Element: Water
Powers: Peace, Anti-Nightmare, Travel, Protection, Lactation, Luck Magickal Uses: Chalcedony, in common with many other stones, banishes fear, hysteria, depression, mental illness, and sadness. It also promotes calm and peaceful feelings when worn or held in the hand.

In the 16th century it was prescribed by magicians to dissolve illusions and fantasies. For this purpose it was pierced and hung around the neck.

Worn to bed or placed beneath the pillow, chalcedony drives away nightmares, night visions and fears of the dark.

As a protective stone, chalcedony guards its bearer during times of political revolution and while traveling. It is also used to ward off psychic attack and negative magick. Chalcedony prevents accidents if worn.

In Renaissance magic the chalcedony was engraved with the figures of a man with his right hand upraised. This was worn for success in lawsuits as well as for health and safety.

The stone is used for beauty, strength, energy and success in all undertakings, and in Italy, mothers wear beats of white chalcedony to increase lactation. An arrowhead carved of chalcedony is worn and carried for luck.

After you have a bad experience you should wash the bad vibes out of your clothes. To do so, allow your washing machine to fill with water, then stop the machine briefly while you do the spell. Take a small amount of salt (no more than a teaspoon) in one hand. With the other hand, touch the surface of the water, saying: "“Blessed are you, O creature of water, be thou cleansed and cleansing".” Then touch the salt, and say: "“Blessed are you, creature of earth. Be thou purified and purifying".” Then put the salt in the water, and say: “"Together, banish evil".” Stir the wash three times clockwise, then wash as usual.

Place cut nails into a jar and add water. Let them steep for a week or 2 until the nails have started to rust and add more water. Open jar occasionally so that fresh air will help the rusting process. Use when the water has a rusty tinge in it.

    Broom Folklore

Traditionally, brooms have been used to sweep away evil and bad fortune. New brooms bring good luck.

Housewarming - A new broom brings good luck and harmony to a new home. Never bring a old broom to a new home

Marriage - If a bride and groom hold hands and jump over a broom, good luck and fortune will abound in their union. An old Welsh custom calls for newlyweds to enter their new home by stepping over a broom and luck will follow.

If a broom falls in your home... unwelcome company will come to visit you.

The old picture of the witch riding around on the broom's stick casting magic spells is believed to have come from a agricultural fertility rite, where the women rode around the fields(like on a hobby horse), with the broom between their legs, hoping to bring the farmers a good harvest.

Jumping the Broom -Many pagan traditions have the bridal couple, jump across the broom, a symbol of fertility (old bit of agricultural fertility magic), to signify the establishment of their new household. The brooms are usually decorated for the occasion and then kept in a place of honor in the home. In many Wicca handfasting(marriage) rituals, couples often jump over the broom if they want children. historically, brooms made great gifts for weddings or handfastings. Just add a little ribbon, some flowers, and your are good to go. No wrapping needed. Every new home needs a new broom!

The Ritual Broom -Witches use brooms in magick and ritual. The pagan broom or "besom" is used in ritual for cleansing the general circle or ritual area. The besom is sweeping away the psychic dirt, getting the area purified for the ritual at hand. A Witch may begin a ritual by sweeping the area with the magick broom, visualising the psychic dirt being swept out of the ritual area. The sweeping also helps to get the mind ready for the ritual, quieting the mind and narrowing the focus for the witch. The besom is a purifier and is related to the element of Water.

Finding Other Witches -Besoms have been used by Witches to indicate to other occultists that they were resident, or at work, by placing a besom (broom) outside the door. This is NOT to say that anyone who has a kitchen broom sitting outside their door is a witch.

Besoms, As A Symbol Of Protection -Many Witches keep a besom by their door, or hanging from their door to protect the home from unwanted outside energies.
