How powerful are spirits?

Hello everyone I've been practicing magick for a while now and decided to work with spirits but before that I want what are they capable of in their full potential and how powerful are they in physical plane.

What is it you mean by how powerful they are?

Why is it you wish to undertake spirit work?

What spirits do you seek to work with? Fae? Ancestors? Spirits of the deceased?

How a spirit works with you depends on what spirit they are, what you are asking for, what you intend to give of yourself in return, etc.

Honestly I wouldn't personally recommend jumping into spirit work, with the mind set of how powerful they are and what they can do for you.

You want to try and approach them with respect, and remain respectful.

To be clear a lot of what you will find you will receive with spirit work is often a lot of information.

You'll receive often, ideas, tidbits of information, lines of poetry, events in history.

What you are incredibly unlikely to see, are spirits manifesting your spell objectives in showy quick ways.

They tend to be more mundane than some think.

Like I said a lot of what you will find especially regards deceased and wayward spirits is often much information. Many also will want help.

It depends. [I'm going to set aside the why and how you plan to work with them and just focus on spirits in general]

So if a spirit has a lot of energy, they can move objects and fully manifest. This is a rarity, so don't expect every spirit to have this ability. [the most powerful spirit I knew fully manifested once for about 3 seconds, and while he could move objects, it was rare. I could feel him poke me or place his hand on my shoulder, but usually, it was verbal communication] Also, you need to consider if this spirit has been dead for a long time as well as how thick the veil between our worlds is. You can give them energy by working with them, but different spirits have different energy levels. [also, if you're working with spirits, ancestors spirits are more inclined to help, but either way, be sure to give libations as thanks, this will give them energy and also a reason to help you in future]

Spirits dwell on the ethereal plane, not the physical. If the veil is thin and they can focus their energy, they might be able to knock on a table, close a door, or throw an object [the largest object I've had was a cereal box, normally, it's a ring, coin, or other small objects] but this isn't a constant occurrence as it takes a lot of energy to interact with other planes of existence, so it's more likely to occur around beltain and samhain when the veil is at its thinnest points.

I suppose the first question I want to ask is "how do you define power?" Or, I guess more specifically, what kind of power are you referring to?

Spirits are immaterial beings, and they operate on levels of emotion, vibration, and energy. Likewise the things that spirits do operate mainly on those same levels. So usually 'power' for spirits often equates to their ability to affect someone in thoughts and emotions.

For example, a being that is strongly negative in vibration, and with access to a lot of energy (which can be used in a forceful manner) could cause oppression, instill feelings of anxiety and vulnerability, make you feel drained and weakened/shaky, or otherwise cause emotional stress and distress.

Likewise, a strong being that is greatly positive and loving in vibration and nature can make you feel warm and comforted in their presence. You can feel a sense of love or safety, and if they choose to impart energy to you it can give feelings of alertness, calm, focus, and emotional healing.
