'Having a vision' is a very indescript term for people these days, and is often more usef by entertainers and other... less than genuine people. It is a word choice that sounds dramatic and mysterious, like some message is being shown to you through a movie in your brain.

Tarot, and other divination (runes, bones, tea leaves, clouds...) are not sources of information beaming knowledge into your head. They are tools to offer the mind triggers for thought. Each card has a particular theme of meaning, which you then compare to your situation or question. It is fuel for intuition, synchronicity, and also reflection on information you may already have (but not realize it).

For example, let's say you are wondering about the future of a new friendship. So you give the cards a shuffle, and pull one.

Let's say it is death... always an attention grabber. A novice's first reaction might be of negativity. Your new friend might be going to die! Or you might be going to die! Or the friendship is going to die! Oh my goodness! *incoherent screams of alarm ensue*

But once you have gotten a bit more relaxed, and have studied the cards a bit more, you might recognize death as a representation of change and transition. You might also consider it's orientation while it was flipped (which is why tradition dictates you turn the cards sideways, not vertically). Now, if you were already feeling unconfident about the friendship, a reasonable reason to want a divination to begin with, then death's meaning and interpretation for you would be influenced by that doubt. You would feel a confirmation that the friendship may not go well, or is on the way to ending. Your already-present intuition is confirmed. Draw another card for context.

Or maybe you feel like the friendship is going well, and you were considering taking things beyond friendship. Death now contrasts your intuition. So you explore. How might death relate? Are there red-flags in the relationship you have been ignoring? Is it just not a good idea right now? Too early and so taking things up a notch could cause an early end? Is the relationship going to change somehow soon?(death of the old). There is something being missed, context is needed. Pull another card.

The best way I've had things like Tarot described to me is this... It's a mirror.

It is used to reflect on. In turn it reflects your thoughts, reflects the situation, reflects your intuition. If the information in your mind was like bits of gold in a field of soil, tarot is a form of shovel to help you dig them out.
