im new to witchcraft

I think you need to start reading...and reading and reading. I know it doesn't sound like fun right now but the only way to truly understand things like meditation and why it will help and what to do next is to do plenty of research. Meditation strengthens your ability to focus and visualize which is essential for any magickal working.
I recommend starting with a great book by Sorita d'Este called Toward the Wiccan Circle which is basically a beginners course and teaches you a brief history and some beginning exercises to get you started in your journey. Throughout the book and in the appendix you are also given further reading recommendations which I highly suggest you read to find your path.
I also am new and I'm still working my way thru this book. The Author states that it is meant to take approx a year to finish because the exercises take time. We don't get them right on the first try. I also will read about an influential figure in the crafts history and branch off and do independent research as well. That is the only way to truly find your way. Thru knowledge and patience. But you will get there. The first step is being brave enough to take that leap which you have done! :)

I highly agree with Lotusdreamer Reading and doing reserch will help you A LOT.
At first when you start reading you may only have a few questions,and that's okay; but be prepared to have more questions after you are done with a book if you that's what you chose or a section on a website, or a video that someone posted.

also try seeing what you are interested it.. that helped me get started. for example:
I am highly into crystals, so I read some books and alot of articles on them, it led me to crystal healing and that lead me into questions about witchcraft (:

It isn't just reading so much as understanding. Take the time to understand each side and then chose what sort of path you would take

My teenage daughter is also new to this. While i am not new and iam not experienced so iam not sure how to help guide her if anyone has anything that can help us, i would accept any help

Also about.com is a good site for all kinds of info. Once there, put Wicca basics in the search bar. It will take you to basics of magick, too. I was on it for hours just looking and reading. And copy and pasted a lot of things to my computer.

from what i have read, researched, magic requires you to know yourself completely, find and deal with the blocks. the most powerful form of magic is love. remember the three fold law, spells need to be free of karmic reprecussions and to every thing there are consequences. practice, meditate, and read, take notes and ask questions. im new to, and im searching for a coven. have a great weekend stay safe. blessed be
