I just cast a good luck spell. All was going well apparently, because the universe sent me a sign of good luck. Unfortunately, I'm deathly afraid of spiders. I killed it! XD
What. Should. I. Do. D:
(I wrote a longer blog post on this tragedy here: http://charlottelynelle.blogspot.com/2011/07/i-murdered-good-luck.html )
So you killed a spider? If it was in your house than yeah you can say you ruined your luck. But that is just in believe. Of course the spider gave you bad karma because it was doing you a favor.
"The mother of all spiders is Arachnida, a beautiful human girl weaver who caught the roving eye of Apollo. She of course was punished by the Gods for the forbidden love, not him. She was turned into the eight-legged little weaver and when you kill a spider and it rains, those are "Arachnida's tears".
Sorry this is a fun tale :) spider's in the day are good luck, killing them is bad luck during the day, when at night, everything is reversed, a spider is bad luck at night, but killing it is bad luck because you just took life from a creature.
Either way, don't kill spiders, there life is just as important as ours.

Um, Darksun? Where did you read that myth?
Arachne was the name of the weaver girl who was the mother of all spiders. And she didn't catch the eye of Apollo...she bragged that her weaving was better than Minerva's. For her arrogance (or some say out of spite) Minerva changed Arachne into a spider. The only variations on the myth I've seen have been whether or not Arachne's weaving WAS in fact better than Minerva's.
And I'd really like to know where the part about "Arachnida's Tears" comes from. I've never seen that anywhere.
Arachnida is the name of the class of eight legged arthropods that spiders, ticks, scorpions and mites belong to. It's a biology term not a mythology name.
Now that has been said, the spider is a symbol of good luck...but like any symbol it is meaningless without people to ascribe meaning to it. If people got bad luck from squishing spiders, there would be some kind of cultural taboo about doing so... I know of no such thing. I suspect your spell is working fine, I mean you saw the spider and it didn't bite you right? If you feel bad, go ahead and ritualize the spider's demise...it makes no difference to the spider. Spiders have short life spans anyway, frequently a year or less.
Don't worry about it. If you have bad luck it's probably not from the spider. It's easy to look for a cause but usually luck problems don't have one. If you're still feeling bad about it, pray to whatever you feel sent the spider and ask for its forgiveness.
Personally I like spiders because they eat mosquitoes. That doesn't stop me from squishing them if they are close enough to bite me or anyone else I care about, because I live in an environment where poisonous spiders are common. Your deity must have a heck of a sense of humor to send you a symbol you hate. Maybe they're trying to tell you something?
