I'm still new to magic, and I have a question that has been bugging me for a while:What is Astral Projecting?

the process where you let your astral being leave your body and travel to other planes of existence, specifically the astral. your astral self is like your spirit [it's not, but it's similar] it's an invisible image of yourself [some people can see it] you can travel around the ethral [similar to a spirit, it's a layer of existence where you're in the physical world, but it's the one spirits would exist in] or go further into the astral plane [which many claim creatures like mermaids, dragons and vampires dwell] it takes a lot of practice to project however, and you need to become totally relaxed.

not everyone works with astral projection, and some feel it isn't real. you don't have to study it, but it's an interesting trick to master. the first time you do it you might be scared, so i recommend you simply wander around your bedroom a little then enter your body. traveling too far before you get the hand of it could end badly [like your body subconsciously locking your astral self inside your body.] no, you can't get possessed by a demon or a spirit, as your body puts up a defense mechanism, if something disturbs your physical self, your astral self will instantly return. as well, you could be [it's rare] attacked by an astral being, your physical self will not be hurt, but your astral self could, again, lock itself inside your physical. as i said, it's rare, and normally occurs when someone bothers an astral being, i've never heard of one attacking for no reason.

read up on it further in articles and books, but you will most likely need to learn/master deep meditation, and balancing your chakra's would help the flow of energy in your body and your connection to the universe.

I now have another question: is it possible to astral project unintentionally?

Yes. Some people can project when sleeping, but their astral self just hovers above their body [so I've read] personally on Samhain I tend to "fall" out of my body when I'm almost asleep. Typically though you need to work at it, and it won't happen while walking down the street for instance, its normally while relaxing, asleep, or in a weakened state.
