A short glance at some of Aphrodite's most common epithets.

Today we are going to be taking a quick look at some of the more common epithets used for Aphrodite. By no means is this the most comprehensive list, and I strongly encourage everyone to do their own research. Any corrections or constructive criticism is welcome. I am simply making this as a devotional act to Aphrodite and as a starting point for folks’ research on a goddess deeply important to me.

Aphrodite Pandemos

Pandemos can be translated to something like “common to all the people,” and as an epithet it served to represent Aphrodite’s more earthly side. According to Plato in Symposium, Aphrodite Pandemos is the goddess of sensual pleasure, directly opposing Aphrodite Ourania, who he considered to actually be a different deity entirely. The second interpretation of Pandemos has more to do with physical intimacy and lust, uniting the people together, and creating political/social cohesion. In this aspect she was worshipped alongside Peitho, the Greek personification/goddess of persuasion and a close companion of Aphrodite. In this form, she was depicted at Elis riding atop a ram. At festivals, white goats were sacrificed to her. If you are seeking to work with the more carnal, physical aspects of Aphrodite, or even ask her to help you with friendships, familial relationships, and work relationships, you might consider invoking this aspect of her.

Aphrodite Ourania

This epithet describes Aphrodite as more heavenly or spiritual. This aspect distinguished her from Aphrodite Pandemos. Whereas Aphrodite Pandemos was said by Plato to be the daughter of Zeus and Dione, Aphrodite Ourania was born without a mother, and her father was Uranus. Hesiod described this aspect as being born from Uranus’ severed genitals and emerging from the sea foam. Regardless of her origin, Aphrodite Ourania was more focused on the spiritual connection and love between people as opposed to lust and sexual desire. Despite these differences it is extremely important to note that Ourania and Pandemos were held in equally high regard and worshipped very commonly. If you are looking for her assistance with long-term relationships, self-love, and things of that nature, this may be the aspect to turn to.

Aphrodite Areia

A commonly overlooked aspect of the goddess, Aphrodite Areia, meaning “the war-like,” was a cult epithet used by her cults mainly in Sparta, but also in Kythira, Argos, Cyprus, Taras. In this aspect she was depicted wearing a full suit of armor and holding weapons. This may be the epithet you wish to invoke if you are seeking her aid with a particularly tough time in your life, with academic matters, and with planning of any sort.

Aphrodite Philommides

Meaning “laughter-loving”

Aphrodite Cypria

Meaning “of Cyprus”

Aphrodite Cytherea

Meaning “of Cythera”
