Begin my meditating. Adding things like soothing sounds or music with a good rythym is a good idea as well as burning incense, candles, and other things that amplify your mood and enviroment. Relax yourself by focusing on your breathing and becoming one with the world around you. You are a medium between the land of living and the lands beyond, free to tap into any realm, channel, or frequency.

Recognize your intent. Why is it that you are doing this? What is it that you hope to gain? Gather your intent and reach out to the world around you with this intent in mind. Gather energy from around you and place it in front of you. Building it to resemple a ball of energy helps when visualizing it. Once you have gathered a sufficient amount of energy, wrap your intent around the energy ball, and release it, intact, but unseen. If this is for you, visualize it hanging around you and helping you in the way you're looking for, or if it's intended for someone else, direct it their way.

Lay the cord out before you with scissors in one hand and say aloud:

Take the cord and cut it in half with the scissors as messily and uneven as possible to represent an unhappy break-up.

Dispose of the cord pieces separately or destroy them by burning them.
