Hi this is Bobby, and I hand carve wands from dowel rods,I use the 36" long rods and I saw them in half, so that leaves for 2 wands apiece, at first i carve out a line at the lower part of the half dowel for the handle and then I carve away from the handle part till I come down to a narrow point,then I work in the designs for the handle, then I paint them and varnish them, though let the paint dry first, then go over it with varnish. The paint I use is Apple Barrel Acrylic, it comes in over 100 colors.
