Ten planets? You mean the major asteroids as well?
Basically, yes: They should all have their positive and negative traits, their benefits and detriments for everyone. It's sort of one of the ways that people can look into their chart information and use the given information for things like shadow work. One way to look at it is like each heavenly body is similar to tarot cards with both upright and reversed meanings.
Each planet is representative/associated with a particular predominant trait, and when they are talked about it generally isn't seen as a 'good' trait and a 'bad' one. It is the same trait, but being expressed in either a balanced or imbalanced fashion. For example Mars is about identity and leadership. But take leadership too far and it becomes bullying and aggression instead.
I find it most useful to think of the planets, the zodiac, and their influences as guide posts on perspective and finding the golden means. There is an ideal balance point for any behavior or attitude. When applied correctly it can be positive and uplifting. When out of balance, and being over (or under) applied, it turns detrimental instead.
When observing your chart and relationships with it, think in terms of spectrum rather than black-or-white and use what is described as guide posts for finding a healthy midground.
And, of course, don't rely on the charts as wrote gospel. The traits they represent are predispositions and tendencies, not definitions. Or, as it was so succinctly put to me once;
Yes. All planet's have both positive and negative qualities.
An example being Saturn, which can be determined. Saturn also can be moody or prone to melancholy.
Determination is normally seen as a positive trait if the planet in the client's life has been balanced and is in a healthy state. This is where work comes in. In intuitive Astrology the astrologer is intuitively able to read a chart. By intuition one can seek answers regards how a planet is manifesting itself within an individual's circumstances, present life.
Therefore through the self work of the owner of a natal, the planet's can manifest in a number of ways.
So. Determination, an example, can be a very positive trait. It spurs us into action, it gets things done.
But, there is the other side of the coin as well with such qualifiers of personality.
One can be determined but at what cost? One can be so determined, they let other aspects of life fall at the wayside. One can be so focused on a professional goal that it begins to interfere at home. It is the astrologers job, to intuit and look, to seek out, if this is the case or not with what a particular planet in sign, aspect, and placement, may be telling them.
It is a long, tedious, involved study, that honestly there isn't too much in the way of scientific evidence to support. With clients involved it isn't merely an act of drawing up and looking at a chart. One must communicate to the individual, what they think and feel the planet's are telling them and importantly why they came to this conclusion.
Is Mars acting rational and in control in a fire sign?
Genuinely this tends to be intuited. Aspects, placements and signs can only say so much.
So yes. There are both positive and negative traits to planets.And many more ways to interpret these.
