Merfolk or merperson is just a fancy name for male and female mermaids. They are a form of nature spirit. Some were said in legend to bring people down in the water and drown them, others were said to save the lives of those who were drowning. Basically they are of both a benevolent and malevolent nature. But most claim them as malevolent or just innocently destructive.

The meaning/origin of mer or mar is "sea". Mermaids were maidens of the sea. Believed to be beautiful women who would be seen by sailors. But when the sailors came too close, they would see that the woman had no legs, and instead had a tail, then they would grab the sailor and drag them down under the water.

The sirens were "mermaids". Greek legend of women who appeared as beautiful who would lure men to their deaths by singing a beautiful melody.

The first "mermaid" was an Assyrian goddess who jumped into the sea and tried to shapeshift into a fish, but couldn't quite get it right. Instead she had her human torso and a fish lower half. After that all the cultures in the area began to catch on, making stories about their own mermaid goddess.

Myth and legend of mermaids are found all over the world in all shapes and sizes. Most of the time they are not nice, and feared. No Disney mermaids exist lol.
