wow, not too surprised it was Fox News after all, but their ignorance is anger inducing. a couple lines really upset me. 'every Wiccan i've ever met is either a big dungeons and dragons fan or a fat middles aged twice divorced midwife with a lot of incense.' might of been the icing on the cake, but seriously, they had no information. 20% does not mean we have 20 holidays, and they dared me a few times to name them all, rather simple task personally. also, if they looked at the history of 'Halloween' they'd see there's more to it than costumes and candy. *sigh* whatever, it's Fox News. they're idiots, last time i was pissed off by them was when they said The Muppets were pushing a liberal agenda and Sesame Street was teaching kids there's starving people in 'the greatest country in the world'.
sad to say that's the way the majority views us. true some people join because 'i want to rebel', 'i want to seem cool' or 'i want more days off' but that's not everyone. i went to college, i had to take Samhain off, it was written into the schools rules that any legit religious holiday could be taken off and not be marked with a zero. well, i got marked with a zero, even though i emailed my teachers that morning. my english teacher was fine with it, my pastry teacher marked me with a zero because it fell on Halloween. luckily i was getting all 90's so it didn't effect my grade too much, but still, little upsetting because there were kids in my class taking off Hindu or Islamic holidays and weren't being marked with a zero. luckily the other holidays fell on weekends or days off.
anyway most of the stuff i've seen about Wicca and other Pagan religions are about the same level of disrespect. there was this one about Kathy Lee Gifford insulting pagans a few years back and i found her 'apology' more insulting because it was so forced and fake it wasn't even funny.
While I do agree that the views presented on the news are incorrect, what do you expect? Open up the forums and look. Dragons, faries, vampires, love spells, "black" magic... What kind of conclusion do you expect them to draw? They are following their beliefs just as we do. People go Christian-bashing rather than trying to help them understand. Do we really expect anything else?
Now, I don't mean to say this is anyone's fault. But if we do not try to help them understand, if we react out of hurt and anger rather than acting with good intentions than we are just as gulity as they are.
LVX,
Shawn.

I saw this. It does not surprise me at all, it is Fox News. It is the place where ignorant people and bigots call home. They think they can sit there and laugh, offending a minority. Christianity is not the majority of the U.S. They run a show that earns them thousands, yet they cannot get their information correct. You do not have to be Pagan or Wiccan to find this offending, you just need to have a brain!

I'm offended just like everyone else here, even if I'm not technically wiccan, but this could actually be an opportunity for us. Think about it, Wicca has always been looked down upon by civilized society for being superstitious and weird and hasn't often been granted the same rights as other religions, perhaps this could be our chance to take a stand. Many more people like to hate on Fox News than watch it, so we have a potential audience.
Someone, preferably a figure (the more "normal" the better) with a reasonable amount of authority such as a business executive, could push for their appearance on a major news program to explain what Wicca is really about and defend it. Hell, this forum could be cited as an example. Yes we have Fluffies who think they've found Hogwarts, but we also have a very diverse community from all different faiths and cultures that practice magic. I myself am pursuing a degree in physics and I practice magic; even science (not necessarily the mainstream paradigm, I admit) is compatible with magic.
We finally have the chance to let the world know about us and who we really are. Let's take it. Instead of complaining about how Fox is wrong, let's prove them wrong for the whole world to see. Let's take finally take a peaceful stand against the ignorant and bigoted that have repressed people like us for centuries and show everyone else the truths that we've kept hidden out of fear for our own safety. Let us finally work to create a world where Wicca is not feared or decried, but accepted and respected. A world where magic is not quite as scary or strange as it seems today. Don't we all want that?

See nothing wrong with it, other than the fact that the holidays they were comparing with were captured by the Christians and turned into their own celebrations.
This is just TV. That's what they're like. In truth not much happens in the world. How do you fill in the gaps?
Let's make news!

This really made me mad. You can even tellthey don't know what they are talking about by the way they talk. Plus I never heard of Wiccanism. Never a less I've heard Wicca ever had the name changed. Plus Dungoens and Dragons is a game that is not a religious thing. Plus we don't have more divorces, in my opinion. I'm not going against someone else's belief and sorry if I do, but I think more christains do because they are in a strict bound religion that doesn't support the use of witchcraft and homosexuality. Plus we don't have to celebrate the holidays or we can do it in the most simplest forms. Like for me on Yule, I didn't do much. I just went into meditation and thanked the sun for all it's warmth, light, and what we need to survive. Plus we do make up a large percent of the population and you must remember how many people, especially kids, hide what they do since people aren't supportive and give stereotypes like they did. How is witchcraft even bad when it's meant to help us?! It might state that in the bible, but remember how many times to bible was rewritten to support Roman's laws and religion. 20% are wiccan holidays? Didn't know we had more then 8. They may include other hoildays, but not all pagans and wiccanscelebrate them.We can say Merry Christmas. Christmas is a holiday about giving, but it also a holiday about Jesus' birth. However, a lot of people don't have to believe in that do to the fact no one truely knows when Jesus was born. That is just an estimate. You can't take Halloween seriousily? Shamin/ All Hallow's Eve has been around longer then trick and treating. Almost all wiccans can name hoildays too!
