I think that's debatable. Burning alive is still slow and very painful. There are dozens to hundreds of different torture methods that one could die a slow and horrid death from.

In some cases they believed they did have proof, and for the traitors, spies, and various other criminals they usually did. Most of this took place in Europe, but from what I understand there were some things that carried on into early America.

Nor could most sane modern-day Americans, including myself, although I admit that if it were completely necessary I would execute a criminal. If I had a choice I would do so in a much less painful and torturous way, but I also believe there are some sick less-then-human people who would deserve such treatment.

lol, no. Interrogating is often verbal, torturing is physical. Some people do torture as a form of interrogation, but the tortures aren't as bad as people claim they are and usually the places that do torture the prisoners that badly are shut down.

I forgot to add; I have been interrogated several times when caught in the middle of a bad situations, wrong place wrong time sort of thing, and I went through three years of torture from my dad. Interrogations can leave you shaky, but torture leaves you broken.
