This is one of my favorite posts in the forums. Demonolgy is often misinterpreted or only studied through one branch. People tend to only look at Christian descriptions when in fact there are several different sources to turn to in order to learn more about this subject.
When looking for a definintion of demon you run into things such as:
1. an evil spirit; devil or fiend
2.an evil passion or influence.
3.a person considered extremely wicked, evil, or cruel.
This is aggravating simply because the word 'evil' is found in nearly everything corrosponding to the word demon, It's not always so. Classifying an entire category of beings based on certain traits from a handful is not an accurate way of determining whether something is 'good' or 'bad'. It's ignorant of fact.
The etymology of the word demon has always been interesting as well.
In Greek culture, the word daimon was used to describe a non-physical being ranked below Gods and above humans. There is no implication of 'evil' in this.
Neoplatonists talked about their 'guiding daimon', whose job it was to lead you toward development of your soul and bring you higher to the Gods. Until Christianity appeared and Revelations was wide-spread, the though of a demon being a fallen angel was not a widely-accepted view. The term pneuma akatharton which is Greek and appears in biblical texts is roughly translated to 'unclean' spirit', 'evil spirit', or 'spirit of impurities' in the English language. The term was used when describing Jesus helping those possessed and was also used as a place-holder for daemon. It's role in Revelations turned it into a word that had an evil implication.
Again, I love this post. I think there should be a continuation of it. It's a fascinating topic.
I don't want to be rude to anyone but how do people say that they are both christian and use this site (of magic might I add) when the bible says (this might not be exactly correct but) suffer not the witch to live? I just don't get it. Thanks
I am not a Christian, but I can answer that for you. Not everyone takes the Bible into consideration word for word. To be a Christian is to follow Jesus's ways and he never said such things. He in fact performed many miracles in the Bible through what same may say was magick.
If you know the origin of the stories, they are pagan. Mithras, Horus etc had nearly identical legends behind them. If you take that into account, the story of Jesus is far older than 2000 years and was accepted among magickal users of Egypt, Iran and Rome to name just a few.
Magick is apart of every religion. Prayer and mass is spell and ritual. A priest performs magick when consecrating bread and wine, laying of hands, etc.
Magick is an art, a craft, and a philosophy of life. There is no specific religious tie to it unless you practice "witchcraft" which has more tradition connotations.
hi i have just joined the spells of magic website forum and it does intriuge me firstly how do you know if you have a gaurdian demon thats new to me as i only thought that we had a gaurdian angel looking out for us also how do you summon your guardian demon as i have a real problem in my life and need any help i can get from any kind of spirit who can help so if you can and you think you can help with more information that would be interesting joanne1012
Two of the easier ways to call upon your guardian demon is to meditate and call out to him/her or to use a ouija board. I would use mediation as it does not require anything but but peace and quite. But some people find it hard to meditate as they live in a city or have problems staying in a single mind state for a long time. Through mediation all you have to do is ask nicely for your guardian demon to become known to you. With a ouija board you ask for the name of your guardian demon and (this is very important!!!!) write it down. By spiritual law your (this applies to angels, demons and any other form of spiritual guardian) guardian demon must be wanted in order for him to be able to help you.
Ok It was a good piece. However most demons are old gods with a chaotic nature. Sure they tend to help with things, However they're more teachers of the spiritual side of things rather than to help with the mundane. and Daemon honesty in rough translation means "group of spirits". However son was right about demons being neither really nor bad, but he forgot about neutral. Like everything else demons do take a point zero view on things especially about the mundane since they're more about teaching you the spiritual ways. And to be perfectly honest I wouldn't summon any astral being. As 1. it's highly rude and summoning doesn't give you control as the book of the Goetia claim. It's highly inaccurate. If you need help just ask and that gives the a much better working relationship with any etheric being.
Thanks for that information. I thought that demons were evil, because that's what everyone says, but after reading that, I truly understand what demons are. You really cleared my head thank you and blessed be!
