but how do you understand how potent a spell is?
i doubt witches have beeping wands that tell you a spell is 90 watts. is there some method to guesstamate the spells potency?
The cost of the items doesn't make a world of difference in a spell. Some claim certain spells are better, like Beeswax or home grown herbs, but it does not mean your spell will fail because you bought dollar store candles. The number of witches casting can effect the spell. More witches means more energy, however there is room for error as some might take longer to charge enough energy, others might not focus correctly. I have read in some group castings they will have the person who needs the spell do the actual casting and the other members charge their energy into the items or tool used.
No matter how much energy you charge however, magic is limited by nature. I believe it is possible for a coven of witches to effect the weather better than a single witch, but if by the laws of nature humans cannot grow wings and fly, a group of witches focusing on one individual to grow wings will not happen.
Whether you have one witch or a hundred witches, the spells that people view in the realm of possible will still be the only spells you can cast.
Seeing as I've never seen an incident of multiple practicioners gathering for this I'd be interested in seeing it's effects. It may not make the impossible possible as was said by another member, but we still don't know the full limits of the universe, so maybe it could produce some unusually strong results.

There are a few elements to what you mentioned that I think are important to address.
First of all... the ingredients that you use in a 'spell' are like filler in a soup. The filler might make the soup more filling or hearty... but you can't make any good soup with nothing but filler. The key ingredient in any magic is completely free - you, yourself. That is, the power of your spirit. Because magick in principle is exterting spiritual influence.
Secondly, having 20 witches all cast a spell *can* increase the effectiveness of the spiritual intent being exerted. But did you know that it can also reduce effectiveness? Here is why... each witch wants something very specific out of magick. And they use different spiritual intents... maybe think of them as flavors, or key ingredients, for that soup. So maybe one witch casts her spells in a tomato soup kinda way. The other one is more aligned with an asian broth soup. In magick, drawing your power, having totally different wills, even if it is towards the same thing, can clash. Instead of making each other stronger, some magick practitioners would actually clash and fight each other, unknowingly, if they cast magick together. That is to say their energy would conflict. Due to this, more is not always good. You need people who work perfectly in synch together. Just throwing 'more witches' together does not accomplish that. :) Spiritual influence is very sensitive.
If one person is completely opened up to the spirit realm, has been working with the same spiritual powers for years, knows exactly what they want and how to get it... that person can accomplish more than 20 witches thrown together. Not always of course. Most people probably have a long road ahead of them to achieve a version of what anyone might imagine to be 'power'. Keep in mind that you can increase the level of power in your magick by doing everything you can to percieve the world outside of your five physical senses... the more aware you are of the spirit... the more you can use it to follow your will.
Regarding limits, this is really a matter subject to opinion - because very few have ever reached the 'limits' if there are any at all. If you are a creationist, naturally, the creative power of God could be considered an extremely powerful form of magick, so then magick itself may have no limits at all, knowing what God can directly form with his will.
But for a human? I think that just depends on you. Normally humans can effect very, very little. However, if you work to rise above the physical limitations of your body, who knows how far you can go? My advice is to pursue something that you can be passionate about, and have fun doing it. Otherwise, what is the point?
i agree, the title draws in too many people wanting to either know how to become a god [not possible btw] or to call you out as a fluffy bunny, then they read the original post which sends most away. then you have the other group that would have a serious conversation about the topic of energy and the possibilities larger castings have who would avoid the topic.
regarding your question larger castings can bring in more energy. while the cost of items doesn't correlate their potency. many pagan shops mark up the prices of things to a stupid degree. there are reasons why some shops would charge more [specialty items means smaller customer base so the cost will be slightly higher] but i've been to many shops where the cost is insane [i'm trying to find a local spiritual shop now that i've moved to far to visit my previous one, one of the places i visited were selling tea light beeswax candles at 12.95$ each they also had slightly larger soy candles at 20$ my old store sold the same things at far less] so you really should be a wise consumer of products.
people feel the more natural a product the more natural energy it still holds [hence why many use beeswax and organic items. soy candles are also on the rise with the vegan witches] but that's more of a belief than proven fact. i have a shelf full of various candles [dollar store ikea tea lights, slow burning, soy, beeswax, scented, all shapes and sizes] and i've really never found a significant difference between them and the spells i cast. when it comes to tools its the energy you put in more than the pricey item.
historically, groups have cast on a large scale to help in dangerous situations. Gerald Gardner claimed he was part of a large casting in world war 2 where they cast a protective cone of energy around England to keep the enemies off their land [which technically no-one physically invaded England, lot of bombings though] there were also many witches who threatened to curse the hosts of Fox and Friends over comments they made about the Pagan/Wiccan community [still makes my blood boil but it's fox so...] currently you might of heard of the large binding against the Trump administration and their supporters. it's done every month on the waning crescent [if memory serves] and will continue until he's out of office. i'm not about to rant about my views on this, but many people have mentioned a change in energy around this time since it started [i felt this weird pulsing energy the first night of the casting] so larger groups can bring in more energy, but it wouldn't trump natural laws.
