More and more recently I have been finding people claiming to have multiple personalities and its getting really irritating. Some people I have found some that genuinely do but Im becoming almost insulted by people who claim to have one good and one evil side to them and that theres an eternal conflict between them when multiple personalities (DID) have no internal communication and are in control for at least a half hour otherwise the change isnt complete but a merge of two with the original personality remaining in control with traits of one of the others. Although Im sure that most people mean no harm by this but please remember that this can be very insulting to those such as myself who genuinely do have DID and struggle to cope with their condition on masses of medication and support and yet still manage to cope. I dont want to name people but if you are pretending to have multiple personalities please stop its rather offensive to those who do genuinely have to cope with it. Please note that if you do genuinely have DID then this is not addressed to you.
tell it Yakov, i couldn't agree more. My case isn't as serious as yours probably but it takes constant interaction with the "others", as like to call them, to keep them all under control. In my case isn't not a bad vs good it's just a bunch of "souls" reincarnated into one body to finish the life they started (at least that's how I look at it, and it seems to make me look less nuts). Anyways, i've seen some of the kids on here that you are talking about, and it's very insulting. So I have to agree with you, those of you, and you know who you are, who Pretend to have this problem, knock it off already, it's disgusting and and hurts peoples feelings...you aren't impressing anyone, you are making yourself seem like a crazy person....so quit it.
Unless they are flat out saying they have this disorder, I dont see the harm. Then again, DID is not in the slew of mental disorders associated with me, so perhaps I simply can't understand it.
Many people feel like they have an inner battle with 2 differnt side to them. The person who gets very angry, the person who gets very depresed...most can't understand why things get to them and they see it as another personality all together as a way to excuse the behavior or a way to cope with their issues.
I agree many people are full of it, don't get me wrong. And I can appreciate that those with DID would find it insulting, but they are merely terms used by people to describe a side of them they feel they cannot control.
As I said, unless they specifically say they have this disorder, I don't think they are trying to insult anyone. Just trying to understand themselves.
I dont think any of them are trying to insult anyone, and Im not irritated by those who say they have a second personality, I do understand that, Im irritated when I ask them about it and they say that they must also have DID to me even when I explain that what they are describing is very different, can I just clear up now that if you can remember what happened when your second personality takes over, then its not DID (there are some exceptions to this which includes some vague recollection as if a dream but they are reasonably rare and a less severe form of the disorder) and also the personalities of DID are separate people usually fashioned from an original one, for example one of my personalities cant talk English, we all have different handwriting, we pronounce words differently, and just to be completely clear there isnt an evil personality, there can be a more aggressive one, a less polite one, etc but that doesnt make them evil.
What I meant was I think some newer people say they have DID because they think it sounds magical or something as in a lot of stories there are good and evil witches and it allows them to be both when in reality neither actually exist like that at all.
Im sorry if sometimes I say some things unclearly, I find it reasonably difficult to accurately express what I feel in English sometimes.
I agree Yakov. I had a friend with DID, and when people claim to have it (or any other illness) without correct psychiatric diagnosis to make themselves seem "special" or to make others pity them drives me NUTS (no pun intended).
