Try meditating on the element first, try to attune yourself with its energies and then work on from there. I've worked with fire spells before, but I believe you are asking about actually bending it to your will so to speak. I've never done this, but I'm sure once you start working with the element it would come easy to you.
Try doing as I said above with a candle flame and then visualize the candle flame doing what you want. You'll have to work with it a bit before you start to see any results. I hope this helps.

Try this it was easy for me but not sure how you will do. Light a candle 4-6" one place your hands in the prayer position in front of the candle 3-4" away then ask the candle to dance for you then move your hands back and forth and watch the flame follow your hand movement. Now before you laugh at my suggestion after you have seen the flame move prop a card or piece of paper between the candle and your hands and do it again where there is no "wind" so to speak from your hand moving ask the candle to once again dance for you as you move your hands back and forth. If it works then try just putting your pointer finger beside the flame and move it away and forward the flame it it will(should) "band to your movement. Hope it works it was the first and easiest elemental magick I did. Good luck ( Blessed Be )
