I'm not an expert on dream catchers, their history, or their significance at all. I do, however, know how to make one. Depending on how natural you want yours (i.e. if you want no metal, no glue, or you don't care), the process changes but I'm going to describe a basic method.
Dream catchers are traditionally meant to "catch" bad dreams. I was told by a friend to make sure that it is on the window or in a place where it can catch the morning sunlight so the bad dreams can be burned away. I personally use mine to protect my dreams from outside influences (i had a problem before that I'm not going to explain). The way I did this was to infuse energy into my dream catcher as I made it. As you should know, the intent you put into your energy is a powerful thing, and the intent in my energy was to protect my dreams. Thus, I made a specialized dream catcher. See how symbolism, intent, and energy can create a powerful object? That is the essence of what magick is.
How to make it:
You'll need
- a ring of some sort. You can find a tree branch and bend it into a circle and somehow keep that in place or just go to a craft store and there is a section with large metal rings (and wood sometimes).
- suede or leather cord or ribbon (to wrap the ring in. I used suede cord)
- sinew or string like embroidery floss (sinew can be found in craft stores near the leather and suede cord)
- craft glue or hot glue (not necessary but very helpful)
- any feathers, beads, decorations you wish to put on it
**Or use a kit like I did for my first one. I found mine in a craft store**
1. Take one end of the cord or ribbon and glue it down to one point on the ring. From this point, wrap it in a slight diagonal (so it'll move down) around the entire ring. Make sure it's tight, and use more glue if necessary. When done, glue down the edge. You may have to use a clothespin or clip to clamp it down while it dries.
2. With your sinew or string, tie it around the ring at one point. Make sure it's tight, and glue it if necessary. From this point, stretch it to another point on the ring a couple inches over and wrap it around (or in a loose knot like one for a friendship bracelet). Continue to do so, evenly spaced around until you reach the first one.
3. From here, go to the first stretched length of string and wrap it around in the middle of this section in a similar way as you did the ring. Continue all the way around and add layers similarly until you reach the middle. Tie a knot to finish. IF you want to add beads to the dream catcher, string them onto the thread at different times between the stringing process.
4. Taking some of the cord or ribbon (the same one as the one around the ring), cut a length off and tie it in a loop around the ring at the top of the dream catcher, so you have something to hang it by. Cut more lengths off (like 6-12 inches depending on how long you want it) and tie them on the ring at the bottom of the dream catcher so they hang off. You can add beads and feathers here. Simply glue the feathers onto the ring or the lengths of cord or any way you know how, and string the beads on the cord and tie off the ends.
5. You're done! Hang and enjoy. And don't forget to infuse with energy if it's intended for more than just looking
I hope these instructions make sense. Love to hear how it goes!

Is it possible to use a dream catcher to catch dreams to the point where it helps to remember dreams; good or bad? Maybe to hang it directly above your head while you sleep, and do a cleansing ritual for it everyday before sleep. Just a thought, what do you think?

Funny you mention that. That's actually the function of the dream catcher at the moment, since I want to remember my dreams to interpret them. Yes, I believe it's possible, just make sure to put your intent into it. It's symbolic, and will symbolize what you want :)
