Hello, althought I have been interested in the craft of magik for a long time I am fairly new to practising it myself and have a few questions about my altar. I would be very grateful for any answers.
I have read quite alot about altars and how to make them, I have read that they can be different and should feel right for you. I have decided to use a small portable altar which I can set up easily in different places. The reason for this is because I do not like to use candles or incence upstairs, also I prefer to cast spells in the small conservatory as I like being able to see outside, especially at night with the moon. My first question is this - is having your elements and tools for your altar in a small box and setting them out when they are needed acceptable?
My second question is about the items I have chosen for my elements;
Fire - A tealight candle
Air - A large feather
Water - 4 small sea shells
Earth - Some small stones
I have also read that many things can represent the elements including different coloured papers, but would my chosen items suffice? (I have cleansed them using my own small ritual).
For my altar I only have my altar cloth, a pentacle and what ever other tools I need for whichever spell I am doing. Is this enough?
I am sorry if my questions may seem naive but as I said I am new to this and if I do not ask questions how will I learn?
I also have a small question about the covens on here, how many covens may each person join? Is it only one or many?
I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong section.
Sweetheart, you are doing just fine. I always put my tools away in my craft closet when I'm finished working.
Your items chosen for the elements are just perfect, though the lack of candles i would find hard to work without, unless i was working during the day. Though candles help me focus(which it may be different for you,) But different colored paper i have not heard of, though i'm sure it would work just fine. Though i use different colored candles for my elements, placing them in each direction.
But from what i understand, your doing just fine LifeonMars =]
any more questions, please feel free to ask.

Oh thankyou very much, Tethaia.
I do have candles, but only use them when a spell needs them. I do normally work during the day though but I often use incence sticks which help me feel calm and focused.
When I first started out I thought everything had to be a certain way, but it is amazing how different each persons altar can be.

The most important aspect of an altar, or sacred space is that it remain sacred, and in my own workings, balanced. It is a place for you to do your magick workings that embodies the environment perfect for your spirituality. In Native American belief, a sacred space reflects your world--mind, body, and spirit. Therefore you want to add aspects to your altar that you want in your life. There is no right or wrong as long as it represents who you are and what you want in your life and it will reflect on your daily life whether you are in front of it or not.
