PSA: Abalone Smudging!

Post # 1

I would just like to include a short P ublic S ervice A nnouncement about Abalone shells and smudging or anything to do with altering the Alabone Shell in anyway, shape, or form, or with any energy that is physical ( such as fire, mainly )

The Abalone shell can give off noxious and toxic fumes when you burn the sage directly into the shell! Always use sand at the bottom, or something! It also can burn the bottom of your beatiful shell, and ruin or bruise its valuable color.

Spread the word!

===============================

Some other wicca/en authors and commentators have also said something about the natural occurance of these two items having a chance to ever combine and that it may not be recommended, despite it being very popular amongst new agers and being mainstream.

Lesson in point: Don't always do things just because everyone else does it and it's mainstream.

Everyone should take note of this, as someone in the magickal tumblr area, this is everywhere.

Everyone wants an abaloone shell to burn sage in, they are putting themselves in danger, if in doubt always add sand to anything you plan to burn in.

Thanks for the Info xx

Huh, ok. I've never heard of anyone burning sage in abalone shells, but I'll be sure not to do that.

I actually just saw an article not but two days ago that was suggesting using an abalone shell for smudging. I hadn't even heard that was a thing before I read it. The dust that can come from carving the shells, burning them or otherwise altering them can really irritate your lungs and even lead to infections. It's always smart to use a gas mask if you plan on messing with something like that.

Thanks for the PSA!

Walk into any new age or metaphysical store and there's a usually an entire wall of stock for a smudge stick and an abalone shell lol.

I love Abalone shells, and I had one for years sitting on my bathroom shelf just because, but how new age shops seem to be manufacturing these things on a large scale or harvesting just seems like another opportunity for capitalism to go wrong... I wish they would stop it, for the sake of the enviroment and preserving what we have before it's too late.
