I'm confused spells are somewhat a prayer right?

Of course. :) As a matter of fact, prayers basically are just spoken spells.

A prayer is a passive request asking a higher being to do something for you.

A spell is an active way of making subtle changes in the world to bring about what you desire.

You can invoke a deity in a spell/ritual/working. Basically, ask them to add a little extra help to what you are already doing.
