The thought never occurred to me until recently when I came across someone very frightened about it. They wanted to know if a spell backfiring was possible, and if so, what exactly causes it? After a bit of digging, I found that what most practitioners blame the results of the casting on varies. It could be casting with ill intentions, not phrasing the words correctly, or getting a detail wrong.
While I was looking it up, however, I was surprised by the communities I came across. Many of them were split on the topic, claiming the backfires as a fact, or only as nonsense. Some of the disbelievers went as far as to say that anyone who is afraid of it happening is not gifted and should quit being a witch.
After reading through many differing opinions, I got curious and wanted to ask here in the SOM community. What is your opinion on spells backfiring? Is it something that fearful practitioners came up with or do you think it is a very real thing?
Don't listen to those people who say to quit being a witch. To me, if you quit being a witch, you weren't one, to begin with. And if you think or know that you are deep down, then you are. Its okay to be afraid. Witches are humans. Fear is an emotion all humans have. If you cast a spell that will not bring any harm upon someone else, then it will not ¨backfire¨. However, if you curse someone of cast a spell to harm them, it will come back to you three times.
I completely agree with what Fhaeriesaid. I would also like to add that the threefold law is also more ofa Wiccan beliefbut the concept is essentially like Karma. I find that whatever kind of energy you send out into the universe, you will very much receive it back whether it be immediate or in years to come. So, when an individual does something I do not like, I leave it up to the universe to decide how that goes for them. I trust they will be getting a taste of their own medicine at some point. I know I have!
I would also like to add that although I do not believe in using magick to affect someone's free will, I have heard some awful stories of people using spells and rituals to make someone love them, only to break up with them in the future and leave the subject not knowing what to do and in turn becomes obsessive and stalker-ish. So the moral of the story is just be careful and do not cast with negative intentions unless that's something you're into!
I believe if one doesn't know what they are doing, then perhaps they can experience some sort of backlash afterwards. I feel that usually when people cast curses is when they worry about it coming back on them.
I have cursed and without any issues. The thing to remember when performing curse work is to make sure you cleanse yourself of the energy afterwards, as usually this is where I believe people experience their issues, or if they start feeling guilty with what they have done, and worry or not if it will come back on them.
All I can say is, if you are going to feel guilty, either don't do it or live with the consequences.
