Voodoo/vodou is an initiatory practice and religion. There are a few books out there, but most often they are from an outsider's perspective, or written by people who are taking a different practice (like witchcraft) and then giving it a 'voodoo theme'.

Adding to the challenge is that there are different forms of the practice, for example the imported/westernised version brought into the Americas during colonial times- which is most prevalent in the deep-south areas like Louisiana. This practice is more open, and finding information is easier as a result. But it is it's own tradition at this point and has some significant differences from the African roots.

Traditional, "old school" Vodou is an outright closed religion by my understanding, and one has to meet an ordained practitioner and convince them to take you in for initiation. So legitimate information is much harder to come by. It is a religious practice based in faith and dedication, with knowledge being gained in grades over time.

Both practices are about a lot more than dolls, and though they are a useful aspect, they are more complicated and involved than general information would imply. ...The good news is that Vodou is not the only practice that makes use of sympathetic magic, effigies and other human amalgams like poppits. If you are looking for quick information that is easier to put together then you might want to look into those ideas instead.
