Can this be done with out a candle?

it is my understanding that you can paint a candle black iof need be. is this true?

Yes, but be sure the paint is safe. While the candle's colour can be used in a spell, if you don't believe in colour correspondences [or only have one colour] you can still use it. While it looks cooler to use black candles in a curse, witchcraft is historically ''use what's on hand'' so cauldrons are witchy, but every household owned one.
