I'd just like to add, I have also seen the word ''familiar'' refer to a particular animal that has a deeper than average bond with their 'human' (not sure what other word could fit there).

The familiar could be a pet or simply friendly animal that helps out in one way or another, usually by some form of energy manipulation or communication (not speaking english or any other human language) that most other animals wouldn't/couldn't do. For example, some cats have been known to help in healing especially or in watching out for harmful/negative spirits. These cats could be the familiar of their owner or whoever it is they help, not always necessarily the owner.
