A warding spell would simply be a protection spell. Often the term ward is used in magic based fiction to describe a protective barrier placed on a building which is much flashier than what exists in reality, though there are protection spells that can be placed on ones home or any physical structure just as you can place a protection spell on yourself.

A ward is a form of amulet--an object of protection. To ward a home, for instance, usually there are four objects that are charged and programmed to protect, and then through ritual, they are distributed to the four corners of the property to watch those walls. Wards, unlike amulets are considered more of a thoughtform than just an ordinary amulet. They are generally seen as "living" and can be "maintained" by cleansing and charging them periodically. The katchina doll is a great example of what some may use as a ward. Some will even invite spirits into statues, crystals or other objects to work for them in keeping themselves, or their property safe.

You have to be able to communicate with spirits first. I wouldn't just ask any random spirit, but one I am already familiar with and trusting of.

Some evoke strong spirits into objects (such as deities, angels, etc). In that case, the spirit isn't inside fully, but leaves a part of their energy or has someone under them do the job in their name.

One of the first things many magic users will do is to create wards to prevent negative entities or energies from entering their home. After all, you want your home to be safe, psychically speaking. So it is a good idea to understand how to build effective wards and some of the various methods of achieving effective wards. Here are some sites with good information on this important topic:
