I might suggest reading some Jungian literature (although beware of the New Age books about it because while there are some interesting observations, for the large part, the New Age movement kind of missed something about Jungs ideas). Jung discussed the idea that the human subconcious has a structure. He originally called these primordial images. They have also been likened to the social instincts that Darwin proposes. While Jung probably won't help you to discern specific images, I think he's a good base and an excellant way to better your understanding in general. You also might want to read about the Rorschach tests.
However, if that's too much for you, I'd actually suggest a book on reading tea leaves. The Rorschach inkblots and the tea leaves are not that dissimilar. A tea reading manual will give you the "what" but Jung and Rorschach will give you the "why".
