I know very little about this, aside from what I've recently looked into. I might be incorrect about some information, however, so I always encourage you to research on your own. If you personally work with crystal grids, I'd love to hear your input.

Crystal Grids
A crystal grid is an arrangement of crystals in a specific geometric shape used to focus intent and energy for a particular purpose. Using a single crystal or stone is potent and effective for many workings. However, the combination of multiple crystals can amplify and focus the working in a more efficient manner.
The power of a crystal grid comes from the combination of the stones, sacred geometry and your personal intention/energy that you put into them. They are often used as a tool to focus intent and energy for healing and protection- and are used in some healing practices due to this. They can be used for many purposes, and in as many combinations as you can think of. Wealth, prosperity, peace, sleep, etc. They can even be placed within a room to cleanse the area.
A grid typically will consist of a design (you can preprint some ideas for this, or make your own), a central crystal (sometimes called a Focus Stone or Master Crystal), and other miscellaneous stones used to channel and add to the overall effect. The central crystal serves as a generator of sorts, used in the center of the configuration to amplify and combine the energy provided by all the other crystals.
Making a Grid
The first step you should take is deciding upon the intent or goal of your working. What is it you specifically are wanting to achieve? Once you have this in mind it will be easier for you to pick out which stones to use in your working. You want to choose stones that convey similar intentions and will enhance your own desire. For instance, if you are making a grid to help you get peaceful sleep you may look into amethyst because it has similar properties. There arent any specific requirements for this- pick stones you personally feel will benefit you and your goal. When you have picked out your stones, cleanse them before beginning. It might do you well to cleanse the area you will be working in as well.
Place your stones in a geometric pattern or shape. If you do not have one decided upon, you can look into other resources to learn which shapes are most effective for specific purposes. This is where sacred geometry comes into play. The link below shows many different designs you might choose from. It would be good to know how these shapes may enhance your working (see: http://www.ancient-symbols.com/sacred_geometry.html). If sacred geometry is a bit beyond you, you can choose simpler shapes that you feel help to channel your focus and intent. A heart for a love grid, for instance, would be apt.
Place the center crystal within the middle of the grid. If it helps you to focus on your intent, you may write down your goal or desire for the working on a slip of paper and place it under the center crystal. Now you may activate the grid. You can do so in many different ways. You can either use a wand or your hand to direct energy for this step. Charge the center crystal, visualizing energy flowing from yourself and your surroundings into it. Visualize and focus on the intent of your working. What was the purpose of the grid? Visualize energy flocking clockwise through the grid (you might move your hand in a similar motion) connecting all the stones you have placed.
