Reading Runes
By: / Novice

Hey everyone!

So I have a quick question. How does reading runes work? I'm a tad confused on the information I've found and would just like some clarity. I feel like this is something that I should know, but divination hasn't always been an area of interest until now.

Thank you to anyone that can offer any insight!

Which type of runes are you working with? Norse runes, witches runes, or Anglo-Saxon runes?

There are only a couple of ways that I know of for reading runes. And I have no idea if either is traditional but I have found them to be insightful anyways.

The first simple way is to have a bag with runes on either ceramic chips or stones. Think of a question or dilemma while stirring or shaking around the contents. Grab one and pull it out. Then contemplate on how the concepts of the rune apply.

Another option is to draw a small circle, about a hand span in diameter (the width from thumb-tip to pinky-tip measured with your fingers spread out). Cup the rune chips/stones in your hands and shake, then pull your hands out from under the runes so they drop into the circle. Contemplate the runes that land inside.

For the latter, if several runes stay in the circle, and you want to narrow the interpretation, then repeat the shake-and-drop using only the stones that were inside the circle from the first go. I try for having at most three or four runes remaining.

It isn't always a method for prediction for me, but it usually gives me decent fuel for reflection.

As for how runes work, To me there are paralells between runes and Tarot when being used as oracles. Instilling random chance into a draw to open the way for subtler forces to provide guidance. (basically, the concept is that there are no accidents, and so despite the act of drawing a rune being consciously random it actually leads you to the information you are meant to have.)

There are several ways to read the Norse runes. Some people use the same spreads as the tarot. Others do similar readings to those that were mentioned above. Picking a single rune is common, as is setting out three runes, one for the past, one for the present and one for the future.

Another way that is done is to have a single white cloth where you choose to read your runes. Shake the bag while thinking on you question or dilemma. Dump the whole bag onto the the cloth, read only the runes that land face up and on the cloth. Those closest to each other should be read in combination.

I recommend the site sunny ways runes for more information on rune readings.
