Soul Travel Question

In the olden days and in traditional witchcraft witches would rub a salve on their body and travel into the spirit world through their soul. What was there purpose when they do this? Why would someone do this? Is there something to gain from this?

I think the reasons could be myriad, and completely up to the individual.

I think it depends on families, communities and regions. Some would us smoke, salve, their own ability and etc.

A consecration oil could be used for clearing and protecting the Self while journeying. Or otherwise acting as a ritual preparation for the journey.

Also, depending on the specific tradition some 'recipes' include the oils and essences of plants with hallucinogenic properties that could be processed into the system through the skin. Sort of like a nicotine patch... but with a psychedelic trip.
