When it comes to things like sigils and runes, 'how many is too many' is very much case by case. Especially because there are creative ways to combine individual symbols together- effectively stacking sigils together like using letters to make a word. So really, the best that can be offered is a handful of guidelines that can affect their limits;
-Abity/understanding; Obviously, the more you know, the more understanding you develop, and the more you can use that to draw/create more intricate and complex combinations of symbols. Turning a series of individual shapes with individual meanings into a single layered shape with layered meanings.
-space; this ties in with understanding. Consider what medium you are using, how big it is, and how many you are using together. There is a lot more space to draw on along a door frame than there is on a bead. Or a string of beads.
- Skill; Tied in with space, consider how small you can draw, paint, write, or carve and still have the image be clear and intelligible. Draw a Mandela on a poster and it is a thing of beauty. Compress it to the size of your thumbnail and it might as well be a big squiggly period. More complexity can mean more space becomes needed.
- goal; The complexity of your sigil will be informed by what you want to achieve. Looking for a basic expression on protection is singular and straight-forward. Sigil to recognize and bring forward thoughts and attitudes of the sacred Self would involve layers of qualities and meanings like masculine and feminine energy, balance, awareness, connection to spirit, openness to positive influence/growth/guides, creation of personal strength, and drawing abundance.
- efficiency; How complex does your sigil need to be, and/or how many would it take to attract or create your goal? Do you -really- need your sigils to be so layered, complex, or numerous or are you doing extra work for work's sake? Are you creating function, or are you worrying over form? Remind yourself that having purpose is of more value than 'looking cool'.
Which spirals back to - Ability/understanding; consider and reflect on what you want to do, and what you can put together to achieve it in the most understandable and efficient way. Learn and gain experience from the process. Look for new ways to create and combine intents.
Then go again and enjoy the spiral. As each time you go through the process your understanding expands, which you then use your next time around.
