They're for divination. You ask a question and then the pendulum is supposed to move and give you possible answers to your question. It's just like with tarot cards, the answer are subjetive and can vary depending on who is doing the reading.
A pendulum can be really anything with weight at the bottom. It could be as simple as a paperclip on a string or you can go out & buy a rose quartz pendulum.
You always want to make sure you have a clear mind and a clear space free of distraction. Unrelated thoughts, distractions, or doubtfulnesscan interfere with the accuracy of the answer. It is important to find ways to relax and keep you focused.
I prefer longer chain pendulums so I will take the top of the chain and wrap it a bit around my index finger. You want to keep your arm and hand steady. Don't worry about shaking. You are going to shake a little. That is gravity and normal whenever we try to hold still. Some practitioners even believe your subconscious sends vibrations down your arm that triggers the movement of the pendulum.
Now, pendulums have different uses. Some people might use them for a spirit board while others may use them to answer a yes or no question. When I get a new pendulum, I will ask for it to show me "yes" then I will ask for it to show me "no". Then, I will ask a question that I know is true or false for verification.I find that different pendulums will sway in different directions for "yes" or "no". A lot of pendulums tend to be made of different quartz. Quartz also have their own vibrational frequencies that help aid us in our workings. Some practitioners believe that you decide which direction the pendulum moves for the designated answer.
It is important to cleanse it and keep it safe after you're done. You can cleanse it with sage, simply putting it under running water, etc.

Pendulums are one of the most useful tools for me on a daily basis. I wear one actually as I have a simple silver chain that includes a cylindrical pierce of Moldavite along side my two other protective pieces of jewelry. I can take them off and use the chain with the Moldavite at one end as a pendulum when and wherever I need.I also utilize different types of pendulums such as a chambered pendulum with a personal piece from the one a I amusing the pendulum to divine for or about. A personal piece may include a piece of paper with the persons name on it, their hair, fingernail, or baby tooth depending on the size of the chamber. Chambered pendulums can also be stuffed with herbs or other items that aid the divination process such as Mugwort, Frankincense, Wormwood, Flax Seed, Meadowsweet, Eyebright, and Cypress. One can also charge or cleanse their pendulum on an altar, in the moon or sun light, with a particular stone that enhances or cleanses energy, with salt water, incense, etc. Practice with the pendulum is one of the best ways to active one's connection to the pendulum and its energy and the practicer's becoming one. A board or mat can also aid one with their use of the pendulum and practice of divination or simply energy work. I often use the pendulum to help clam my mind in meditation. I use it as an indication of my energy and my mindfulness of my energy on many levels of existence as we have a conscious and subconscious mind working simultaneously.
Many Blessings in your practice,
Katie
