Dealing with Scammers

Sadly, as hard as we try not to, we occasionally get scammers on this site. The Mods can't always catch them before they start their scams, so we do appreciate it when our members bring them to our attention. But creating new accounts saying that someone is a scammer is not how to go about it. Anyone can do this and they could even do it to you. That's why we have means to make sure that the claim is valid before we gag an account.

So what should you do?

If the person is sending you e-mails that seem to be scams you can click on the link below their e-mail message that says "Report". This will make their e-mail visible to the Mods and we can then act upon it. This is the best approach as it gives us visible proof that they are violating site rules.

If you choose to go directly to one of the Mods, then you need to copy and paste the spam message into your e-mail to the Mod so they can see what the issue is. We need to have some evidence on which to act to prevent gagging someone because another member doesn't like them. We want to be fair to everyone.

Thank you, Lark. This is an excellent reminder and look out for users.

I would like to add that users to please make sure anything dealing with the Advertisement sections of the forums or the Videos section of the website is coming directly from the source of the user who created it. Sometimes scammer will comment on videos or pretend to be the original user to give you false information.

When it comes to any business or scams, please verify that all information is legit & accurate.

I wish I had a copy of the message, but the very obvious scam that has appeared since I found the site at 15 [and that was 18 years ago, yeesh] but if you see a message that's along the lines of "My life was a wreck. then I met Dr. All-Caps Name Here, and now my life is amazing. Here's his email, phone number, whatapp and other ways to contact" That is an incredibly obvious scam, do not contact it. But scams aren't always this obvious.

Sometimes you get a spell or reading and the other person goes "I sense a block" or "someone has cursed you" and only they can save you, but they'll need an extra 50$ for supplies [they tend to ease you into the price but then become persistent like you're in grave danger and need help before it's too late and only they have the ability to fix this] this type of scam happens a lot in pagan spaces [never heard of one on this site, but it can happen] These little bonus charges are usually little and justified "oh, we need the expensive ingredient so the spell is extra potent. Just 25$ more" and by the end you've handed over a 1000$. If anyone ever says they can sense something working against you and the only person who knows how to help is them and them alone, walk away. This is a scam. Go and ask for a second opinion if you're worried, but spells can be cast or removed by almost any witch.

I would also like to add [since I tend to point out scams in the comments/forums] I call out a scam to warn other members, but then I report the message to the mods [which you should too] The mods aren't always on, they're usually busy, and we're in different time zones. I might see a scam while a mods asleep so it'll take hours before they can respond.

When I find out who is spamming the site with these fake Profiles of supposed scammers and also posting lewd pictures, know that you will be gagged at that time for violations of site rules. There is a process for reporting scams as posted above..

I wholeheartedly agree with you three, but I'd like to add a suggestion of my own....

Ignore the person, they likely want the attention.

From what I have seen(both on Spells of Magic and on other websites), they mainly seem to be attention-seekers. And if we give these kinds of people this kind attention, it'll only boost their egos, and make them do those things more often.

That works for people who know it's a scam and it's normally what I would do, but remember that some people can be very impressionable or desperate. If we ignore scammers, then that gives them free reign to scam vulnerable people.
