Thank you Doctor for your insight and the points you bring to the table. I completely agree that all of the new shows have opened up these young minds and brought them to sites like these. I can understand the frustration that one might get to with all of the posts regarding things we have convinced ourselves that can't possibly be true, however, its the openmindedness , imagination and belief that allow us to do fantastic things that most of the population thinks is obsurd and impossible. Please realize that I relate to the blunt answers that are given in these instances but I think there are ways to let the person know your beliefs without shutting them down in such a way that might feel that they are unwelcome and turns them away from the magical path altogether.
In response to the brain thing (although I have not been able to read the link provided by Lark yet) I would argue that even the smallest non-human living creature has the ability to breath, walk, run and process things with no actual effort, as in having to think in order to accomplish said tasks. The difference in our brain and the other species lies in the fact that we are aware of our existence and can have deep thoughts as to why we are here, what all are we able to accomplish and have such an incredible imagination. We all (practicioners of magic) know there is more to our imagination than what you can find in the psychology books... and its such a staple to our being able to be successful in our practice that I feel it would be more beneficial to others seeking such fantastic powers to be directed to read, learn, meditate and go after their dream instead of stumping their growth in the spiritual and magical paths.
Without the ability to have a private place where the more advanced along the path of magic can converse its difficult to express exactly what our beliefs are without obstructing the path of the ones that need to find their own beliefs so that they can experience things for themselves... in my humble opinion its an important part of the journey that too many of us were not allowed. To take away one's imagination, curiosity and wonder is to hinder their growth. I think ones beliefs are always best to be learned naturally through trial, practice, reading and meditation. For instance, If someone comes here and wants a spell to be able to levitate, its my position that its better to let them know that only thru much practice and a very strong understanding of the energy forces would one be able to complete such a task than to tell that person "Its impossible to levitate... don't waste your time."
Oh.. and to touch on a couple points I didn't respond to: I agree that science and magic (metaphysics) are one in the same but that science has not advanced enough to explain or prove many of the fundamentals of magic, so one who has studied much of the known scientific principles and theories might find certain abilities hard to believe.
Trinityrose: I believe in mermaids as well and believe you could have saw one or some. There are ancient cave paintings depicting mermaids and humans fighting and hundreds or thousands of reports of seeing similar creatures. In my mind I can't rule out the possibility of them existing. So for what its worth, I, for one, believe you and don't think your crazy :)

I agree with what Lark wrote.
And to add to this, without having to repeat myself, here is a post I made over a year ago that I still believe whole-heartedly.
when i was reading stuff a little while back, i remember this quote, "we are the creators of our own universe", i completely forgot where i read it though, but it stuck with me. and the next one i've heard it from several different people that i trust and also read it on different occasions. "if you will, then so it shall be". in my life, everything i have wanted to desperately happen, has eventually happen. coincidence or something else, it still happened. so i personally believe that all things are possible, but in my case, i have never hoped for something like, as i've seen on here multiple times, to grow wings. what i have hoped, wanted, and to me, needed, was all things in the bounds of what most people would consider reality. in my opinion, i think its more about how much you believe it and how much energy you put into it.
@Personified: What a great post... I remember reading that when it was first wrote back before I was a member. I completely agreed then, and still agree now with all of the points you made. Its my position that it IS possible that we can grow to a point spiritually, magically and mentally to better tap into the more fantastic possibilities... and the point being that if you DONT try, there is zero percent in achieving such accomplishments.
I choose to believe that anything is possible regardless of what others have told me and it is because of my thirst for knowledge, wonder and curiosity that I have been down such a grand path. Looking back over the years I would say that the journey itself was magical and full of wisdom, regardless of how many times I failed a spell or didn't achieve my goal. I just hope that others in a similar point in their path that I was in at any given point won't get discouraged because the process of learning and keeping the hope and wonder alive in your heart is an important part of growing spiritually and magically.
I think we can all agree that the fundamentals in most any path dealing with a magical path are looking within and knowing thyself (which leads to one being happy with who they are), appreciating Mother Earth and taking care of our environment, being able to appreciate all forms of creatures no matter what they look like or their beliefs, learning to love everything and everyone and to learn that there is always hope even in the darkest of hours along with many other things you learn as you go along your path. It just strikes a chord with me to tell others what is and is not possible when the whole point of our paths is to strive to understand and manipulate the very forces that regulate every aspect of our path. Add to that the possibility that one might be detered from entering one such wonderful path as ours and it seems that our approach to answering such fantastic inquiries could be better worded to encourage one to delve deeper into the occults and develops the knowledge and skills to accomplish what they desire.
And I still stand firmly on the statement that anything is possible... just because others don't believe its possible, does not mean that it isn't possible. And if someone wants to believe such things, what does it hurt if they go after accomplishing such fantastic feats? Is it for fear that if you encourage such ideas that others on here will shun you for it? Is it more beneficial to the individual asking for such guidance to tell them such things are impossible? Maybe I need to realize the benefits of telling others that certain things probably aren't possible because I haven't ever witnessed such a thing and it doesn't make logical sense? If someone could enlighten me on why its more beneficial to discourage others on such topics I would appreciate it. Maybe I'm just not getting it.
*side note*-This has turned into more of a "teaching" thread... isn't there a specific forum for that? I didn't expect it To go in this direction or I would have posted it in the proper place.
Thank you all for your thoughts, points and participation on this thread. Please feel free to jump in and make your point heard as well.
The main issue i have with many new members is that they dont use common sense. If it was possible to manipulate matter , float about , change your appearance and so forth , it would be a widely accepted fact , awknowledged by science and everyone would be doing it.
Furthermore the factor that they seek such "knowledge" on a public website is even more rediculous , which only makes my first statement even crazier because if such knowledge did exist and was public to see all over the world , everyone would know about it and magick wouldnt have a stigma about it.

As of the matter of the brain percentage that we use. It is a myth that we use only ten percent of our brains. But it is incorrect to say that humans use one hundred percent of our brain. By that i supose people mean that the brain uses every part of itself. While that may be true the brain does not use every part to its true potential. This is obvious, if it did we would all be insanely smart. much of the brain is still a mystery to science. Such as how new memories are formed, why we need as much sleep as we do, and what consciousness is and where it comes from.
Thanks WizardTonkor. I dislike hearing people claim some things do not exist simply because they've never seen or chose to not believe in it's existence. I've seen many strange things that have caused me to question my sanity but I've recently decided, hallucination or not, who's to say that what I've experienced isn't real, whether it existed in this dimension or another, perhaps in my mind. I also agree with everything megadeth9715 said. I've also read somewhere that we create our own realities and sometimes I feel the need to repeat to myself "I'm the creator of my reality, I am the center of my own universe". It helps me get out of any unwanted situation dealing with strange energies by reminding me that I can change my mindset and come back "down to earth" whenever I please.
Sillieh: I can understand and I appreciate your point of view (and even sympathize with you), however, take a normal thinking stranger off the street and tell them that each plant, herb, color, phase of the moon, word, thought, etc. carries its own magical property and when you combine them just right sand think really hard you can make your thoughts manifest and wishes come true.... and I bet you will get a "That's impossible" look and probably a 'down-the-nose' hearty laugh right in your face. Shortly after that person caught their breath from laughing so much (or running away from the crazy person) you might hear something similar to your thoughts of the aspirations of those that annoy you and make you think they don't use common sense. Who is that person to tell you that your crazy and your wasting your time on money spells or get a new job spells? Just because that person doesn't believe in what we want to accomplish doesn't mean that your wrong.. it just shows that we all have different beliefs, goals, aspirations and hopes. I understand where your coming from but I don't see why anyone along a magical path would be so quick to tell another on a similar (granted, a much more far fetched path) that there are things they shouldn't try to accomplish because it doesn't make sense to them. :::shrugs:::
As for the fact that such knowledge would be so widespread and everyone would be doing it if it was possible.... why, then, is the whole planet not into magic? Its so obvious that its very real to us, we are discussing such things on a website dedicated to such powers now, yet we are so few in numbers. If there were/are those that CAN do such grand magic I must believe they have gathered enough wisdom to not share it with anyone that would abuse such powers. And in order to do such things one would have to have an incredible amount of knowledge on the workings of so many different aspects, that unless you devoted your life to obtaining such power, you wouldn't be able to achieve such powers. Add to the above that you would have to believe such things were possible in order to attain said objective, and you find that you could hold an ABC special with proof and only a very few people would buy it, much fewer would try to achieve similar powers and only a very few would ever be able to achieve it.
I'm not saying that I want to project the image that all of us along a magical path think we can grow wings, I'm simply saying that its my feeling that if someone wishes to go along such a path, we should let them be. We don't have to support them or even agree with them, but I would hope that we would be able to accept them as they are and point them in a direction to learn for themselves what they are and are not capable of.
Megadeath: Thank you for your input and support on this topic. I have always similar things and believe there is a great amount of wisdom and facts in those statements as well.
Trinityrose: Your welcome :) There is so many things that go unexplained that should be so simple and consistent that it seems as though the more you try to explain things, the more things don't make sense. It truly is like everyone makes their own reality... and if you think about it in the most mundanely simple things in life, you can clearly understand how such a statement could be so true... like I think I am "this" kind of person but if you ask 5 others that know me they may all have a different idea of what kind of person I am, and none of them agree with my own opinion or each other. My reality is my own just like everyone else has their own.
I also find it helps to think/chant such things. Its nice to have the ability to escape the combined realities of everyone and take the pleasure in knowing that you control your own reality.
