Tribal stories tell of people who could physically transform into animals and some elders still believe people can. I'm not sure how but I know for a fact that you can change your shape on the astral plane. When I travel in the Lower World (Shaman version of astral plane) I always take the form of a wolf. It is also possible to communicate with animals.
