Be attentive where you plant, if you plant indoors, make sure your plants have proper drainage. If you don't have a typical planter, you can drill holes into the bottom of a container or add rocks. If you grow outside keep in mind how much sunlight a plant should receive.

We're lucky enough to have information available online, so make sure to thoroughly research what you want to plant. Often, some plants shouldn't be planted next to each other, or you need to contain plants that spread rapidly and might kill others (ie. dillweed).

My grandma is an intense gardener, and she would recommendkeeping in mind which plants should get morning sun, afternoon sun, and evening sun. You can also keep in mind the placement of the plant to influence the properties of your plant. (magical or otherwise) ie. Oregano, tasty in spaghetti sauce and a great antibiotic, takes on a more bold flavour when exposed to the noon sun and increases the potency of the herb.

Mostly though, you have to be attentive, watch for pests, rot, or drooping and be careful about water or sun.

Mint will hook up with your oregano if it's near by. It does start to take over. It's good for the pets to eat....

I am planning on planting sage, lavender and aloe vera here in my home. Not only would it be fun to plant and take care of, but it will make this house more " light " and hell, does it need to be lighter! xD

I have a cactus that I always keep in my office, it helps getting rid of all the negativity. Fun fact, my office is the only space in my home where people love to be in. The rest is just full of negativity duo to my family.

Cactus doesn't need that much attention, I keep it in a special place where it can get plenty of sun and small ammounts of water here and there.

I can not wait to get more plants!!

That all sounds lovely to keep around the home! How would you grow sage and lavender indoors? I've wanted to grow them myself, but I always thought they were both outdoor plants only and never tried. I've actually been considering turning my spare room into a big indoor garden area, since I can't keep many plants around the house out in the open (I have two cats who love knocking things over, lol)

These tips and websites are definitely useful though, I'll keep them in mind when I start getting everything. Lately I've mostly been focusing on creating aquascapes in my aquariums, but it would be lovely to have a little space in the house with larger plants and whatnot.

As for cats, they are a bit of trouble. My boss has a cat in her home, a protector, that always ran when I tried to pet it. But funny thing is, last saturday I was sitting and he just jumped on to my lap and slept there. I had so many back pain from not moving because I didn't want to ruin that opportunity, it was amazing haha.

That sounds amazing!! I would love to be able to do that as well! But sadly I live in an appartment which just makes everything harder, but I do have a big balcony so it's fine.

I wish I had a balcony in my apartment, I'd love to be able to spend that time outdoors without having to leave the comfort of home! Also thank you for the links, I'll definitely read them and take them into account for the future if I start transforming that room like I hope.

I always hate to move whenever my cats get all comfy on me like that, even though they do it pretty often, so I definitely understand how you feel! I love that feeling of having them all cuddled up with you. I have so many pictures just of my cats snuggles in my lap sleeping because it's just one of my absolute favorite feelings :)

Always get a plant that belongs in that environment. If you try to grow a palm tree in a cold area that will never work. If you had a big greenhouse, of course, that would work as long as you have everything in the right condition.

What helps fertilize the plants doesn't always have to be store-bought fertilizer. My dad and I use the water and gunk we clean off the koi pond filter. It is almost like a giant green sponge. I skimmed through the response and noticed someone mentioned eggshells. Also, you can

-Straw-Bale Gardening-
Pick a prime location: Find highly compressed straw and an area that gets more than six hours of light.
Condition the straw: Treat the straw with fertilizer/water heavily two weeks before planting.
Plant seeds: Seeds are able to be planted in the bale with the proper technique.
Protect: Put a fence around your garden. Make posts at the end of each row and run a wire to post to post. This helps vines that are veiny grow.
Compost: You can not use the same bale twice.

Proper Airflow: All plants need air that can circulate around. If you have an indoor plant and it is in a room where there isn't a draft going through chances are that it will die even with proper watering and sunlight. Although, the wind is good for plants to make sure it isn't so strong that petals or leaves come off.

Proper sunlight: All plants are different and need different amounts of sunlight. Some need half shade while others need full shade. If you keep a half shade plant under full light all day it might dry out and burn. Don't let this lead you to over water it.

Soil: Different plants need different soil. Don't go into your backyard and dig up dirt from there. It doesn't work as the soil is too compact. If you are using a pot just buy potting soil as it is lightweight and won't suffocate the roots. Also, keep drainage in mind about soil and how much water the plants need over time.

I liked a suggestion I saw in previous replies, although it sounds crazy, talk to your little guys! I have a strong bond with all of my plants, they're like my children,haha. I talk to them and hum to them when I'm watering and they all have names. Maybe I'm just nuts, but animals and people aren't the only things you can bond with!

I agree Morose. I talk to my plants, they are all so lovey. But also now and then put egg shells in the soil for calcium, epsom soil around the plant if they look bad, or if you think it needs it. There is a lot of things that are good for plants.
