First off, Witchcraft is not a catch-all term for magic. Second of all, I wouldn't touch Voodoo/Vodou/Vodoun unless you know what you're doing (and that's going to take a lot of research and talking to actual practitioners from those paths).

Despite what people who are trying to be inclusive and positive are saying, there is some importance as to what you call yourself, be it if you believe words have power or if it is from a culture you could end up disrespecting. Not all people are open to others using their cultures.

Common catch-all terms are occultist or practitioner. You truly can call yourself whatever you like, so long as it is not disrespectful and it has at least some personal meaning to you (or even if you just happen to like it). You will have to keep in mind that some terms or labels might be off-putting to a community, even if you are a legitimate practitioner (if you end up sharing your label). Another thing to remember is that a label is not a bad thing, but it is also not the entirety of your being. It is a form of identification and when it's used as it is supposed to, there is nothing wrong with having one.

Certain, positive labels are also helpful when communicating with others and when one is trying to get different messages across, because it is easier for some people to understand what is begin said/explained when they can associate the idea to something.

Positive labels can be as harmful as positive stereotypes. It's how you label yourself, whilst remembering that the label is not you.

Oh,yes! "a label is not you". I say that I am a witch. But, what is a witch? My dictionary gives two definitions of "witch", both female! And nine definitions of "witchcraft"; all of them wrong!
But, strictly speaking, I am only a man who practises what I choose to call Witchcraft. But witchcraft means so many things to so many people; as does the word witch.
Labels are meaningless. They are just that! Labels!

Brysing, labels, at least to me, are rather important. Names are powerful things. Your own personal name holds what you consider to be you. Like when someone says that their name is Alex. But your name is Alex as well. You feel kind of weird because this person has your name. Has a peice of you. What you call your particular flavour of magic is important to you. But this is simply my opinion.

I'm a hekau. I like calling myself a hekau because I do heka. I like calling it heka because it is a term which specifically represents the magical-spiritual-religious things which are interconnected in my path as a Kemetic.

I'd be offended if someone who is an atheist started running around calling themself a hekau, because you can't be a hekau unless you practice heka. (It's the nature of the term.) If you practice "heka" without belief in the Netjeru (ancient Egyptian deities) as real, integral parts of the universe, you are essentially taking a dump on me and the culture which I attempt to recreate for myself.

What "a label isn't you" doesn't mean that the label isn't important; what it means is that the label is not who you are, it only attempts to describe what you are in the most commonly understood terms. I may call myself a hekau, but it isn't me .

When you let a label (even Alex) become/define who you are, you loose/lock yourself in it.

I am looking for somebody to point me towards some helpful information on psychic ability. I am not even sure 100% if that is what I have felt more inclined towards. I need to educate myself more on it and maybe talk to somebody who is so inclined as well. Looking for some direction after being lost for years.
