User 22974 seems to be quoting my daughter's book. Those wizardology books. "A Guide to Wizards of the World". It is a work of FICTION written by Merlin! Please do not mix this up with the real world of magick. Although it has many facts within it, such as tool names, astrology symbols, the basic idea of various types of magickal practioners. It is not 100% factual. There are things in there that are nothing but pure fantasy. Do you believe it was written by Merlin too? He isnt proven to exist. Wouldn't a book by him be contrary to that?
Some real witches own brooms, known as besoms. You do not fly on them. That's as ridiculous as believing the other lies spewed by witch hunters about us. If that was the case, I think air traffic control would have problems.
The only way that witches "fly" is through astral projection. If a witch is skilled enough they can slightly manifest like a spirit while projecting to contact other people. I have never seen nor experienced any physical levitation. These are parlor tricks, they have no purpose.

Flying broomsticks; flying ointment; phoenix feathers. This site gets sillier by the day!

Flying ointment is actually supposed to be an ointment that aids in astral projection Brysing. Or at least that is what I have previously researched has said.

The significant word here is "supposed". Flying ointment is an illusion.

I cannot agree with Brysing more. I can only echo what is said, and that is there are NO FLYING BROOMSTICKS!
This is why I hate fiction books that give people the completely incorrect idea. -.-
It's not the authors fault that the reader can't distinguish between reality and fantasy.
As for flying ointment, technically it is an illusion since you don't actually fly. It's just an oil that when a decent amount is absorbed through the skin will give the hallucination of flying or being away from your body. People do use it to aid in astral projection because it does have the freeing effect where your consciousness separates from the body.
I've never had to use it to help project, but I did put it on my third eye when I was much younger. Didn't dig the tingling sensation at all.
