You can't control people's minds but you can influence people greatly by whispering in their ear. I don't mean actually whispering in their ears. Just that you can twist people to your way. I don't agree with this though.

Nobody can actually "control" your mind. Your mind can be "suggested", for instance by hypnotism (and that takes a lot of practice!). Most advertising is really trying to "control" by suggestion. A good, well-trained, salesman can make you believe almost anything! But it is "suggestion" not "control".

If you have a strong will and believe a certain way no one can sway you.

Mind control is typically geared towards indirect interference of the decision making of said target,usually done without the consent or approval from the person they are attempting to manipulate.

It is not entirely coercion, persuasion or deception.
There are a number of different forms of mind manipulation.
A rational manipulator will choose their strategy and consider several means and methods of influence fear, pity,intimidation and flattery, usually intended to limit said targets decision making and choices by manoeuvring said target towards a specific option or limiting the targets options one would consider whilst making choices.
Manipulation can also be used to open the said targets mind by manoeuvring them to expand their field of vision thus opening them up towards other possibilities.

That being said manipulation can in no way really be categorized just to expanding, limiting choices, distraction, intimidation or temptation.

It is and can be a quite sophisticated and motivated action which can take on many different forms, shapes and disguises using emotional and intellectual strategies being just one form amongst many.

On earth or somewhere else,it can protect you. About controlling? I don't know,I'm quite convincing without magic.
