Don't forget that in Norse Mythology the moon was a dude and the sun was a lass. Anthropomorphising an object will result in different traits being assigned by different societies. Feel what it means to you, and if that means doing a little research as to what other people or cultures believes that is good, but make up your own mind.
For me the Moon is just a rock, the idea it represents is neither inherently male or female. Duality such as this is helpful early on in your magickal development but get too attached to it and you spend more time chasing your tail than practising. There is no black or white, only shades between.
still in some legends as you may call them it has happened that both the sun and the moon are female such as in romeo and juliet juliet may be like the sun rising to kill the envious moon clearly shows that the moon is female
Chad, I look at things scientifically too. Or at least I try to. Comparing mythology in this thread is more a fun little game to me then trying to find truth, the sun is a giant ball of gas and the moon is a (much smaller) giant rock. It is interesting to find what mythologies believed what, but scientifically the sun and moon are as I said. Ball of gas and giant rock.
In Japanese mythology the Moon was female and came from the eye of a boy who was attempting to flee from the land of the dead. The Sun was a male and came from the other eye of the same boy. The nose became something as well, but I can't remember what that was. I thought it was funny though.
I would also like to add that, at least at that time, females were considered superior to men as far as religion goes. I could be wrong, but I think the men did the work-stuff and the military-stuff so that the women wouldn't have to and not because the women couldn't. As a result the women would stay home, clean, and cook so that their men could take care of them properly and in comfort. The relationship was a two-way thing as with any relationship, but the reasons for it being that way were a bit different.
The moon is neither male or female in fact the only thing that makes it so is by what a person believes and whom we choose to make represent it. I believe in Artemis and Selena but that does not make the moon female.
If you follow Japanese Mythology that would make the moon female because, if I read things right, it's supposed to be a giant female eye-ball. lol. You can read how they believed that came to be in my previous post or you can look it up for yourself.
I think that is exactly what this thread was about, beliefs. But then it died and disappeared for a long time and now it's alive again so are we back to posting beliefs? Or do you have a different direction for the thread to follow? I'll be happy either way, I enjoyed this thread before.
