Last time i checked there are FIVE BASIC elements, Lightning is another, then following the nature element rules, there are others by combining two elements.
Land + Water = Wood
Water + Wind = Ice
Fire + Earth = Magma/Lava
Wind + Lightning = Light
Fire + Wind = Flight
So on and so on, theres 5 basic elements, and a multiple of 20 by combining 2 elements together. I'll message you ALL the elements if you wish, or I could just post them.

Lightning is not a traditional element, though personally I think it deserves some sort of special recognition as a natural force in magickal workings. The 5th element is usually considered some form of Spirit or Divinity, sometimes called Akasha (the name in Hindu teachings).
Also, the definition of an element is something that can not be broken down into simpler components, so those combinations you have there are not true elements... I'd consider them manifestations of The Elements interacting, how they work together to create and shape nature.

I've often viewed lightning as an aspect of fire. If you consider static charge as a lesser form of lightning, it is created through friction, to some extent. Much like many other forms of heat and, eventually, fire.
It is certainly wild, fascinating, and mysterious... but it has a great deal in common with the feel of fire, while still having much of air.
Consider the "feel" of lightning alongside other elements.

Lightening travels up as an electrical charge from the ground to the sky, not down like most perceive it. So I would guess that lightening is earth and fire because once it strikes the area is burned.
Depending on what part of the world your looking at, there are different ideas of what elements correspond with what and what the elements are period.
For instance in the Chinese beliefs, there is Metal, Earth, Wood, Fire and Water.
Wood is their wind if you are wondering where wind is.
*flips through book of shadows*
Wood = Blue, Wind, Spring, East, Germination, Extension, Softness, Harmony
Flavor=sour, Sense= Eye
Fire= red, early summer, heat, growth
Favor=bitter, Sense=tongue
Earth=yellow, late summer, growing, nourishing, changing, transform
Flavor=sweet, sense=mouth
Order
Wood generates fire, that generates earth, that generates metal, that generates water, that generates wood.
Superior/Inferior
Order
Wood subjugates earth
Metal subjugates wood
Fire subjugates metal
Water subjugates fire
Earth subjugates water
They use this in their magick and in their medicine. I have it because I enjoy learning tcm (traditional chinese medicine) and using oriental diagnosis. And you need to know this stuff to follow along. I really should memorize it one day.
Each element is equal. There are no weak or strong elements in the circle.
They both balance eachother out, and have importance.
And as to controlling the elements, connecting with them helps first. It makes you feel more comfortable with that element, and it will probably accept you more.
