The new movement given the 'sinister' name chaos magick has nothing to do with the practices of Egypt per se, unless the individual practitioner wishes to include them....
Ok first of Chaos magic is not evil, in a way it is viewed as chaotic. But it is not because the person is crazy and likes to cause chaos. Instead most chaos witches, which is what I refer myself as most closely related to, they are normally very creative in their spirituality.
Now when I say creative, I mean we use belief as a tool. We take what we learn, and we use what works best for us. We don't follow tradition, we don't follow a specific guideline really. We simply take what works. If casting a physical circle does nothing for us we don't do it. For example I cast a circle of light around myself in my mind, and I use an astral altar.
"It is quite possible that no two chaos magicians would agree on this, but even despite that point, chaos magic is generally not what many people think it is. I would argue there is no such thing as chaos magic. There are no sets of techniques that make up chaos magic; therefore it is not a system in and of itself. Chaos magic is an attitude, a philosophy that promotes experimentation, play, and creativity while discarding dogmatic rules. Chaos magic points out that the techniques more than the symbols are what matter and that our belief in a system is actually what makes it work. The attitude discounts the idea of absolute truth and focuses instead on results within the real world. Often chaos magicians would say "Nothing is true, everything is permitted referring to the fact that you can theoretically do anything. The idea is to test different sets of techniques and figure out for yourself whether or not they work. This sort of experiential attitude fosters creativity and inventiveness and puts emphasis on results to "prove a given set of techniques. Chaos magic is a "meta system which means that it is a theoretical framework to fit other magical systems into, so the practitioners of those systems can more easily have a shared language to foster cross communication and experimentation across the various knowledge sets that different people present."
-Found this wonderful explanation on this website below:
A state of extreme confusion and disorder
The formless and disordered state of matter before the creation of the cosmos
(Greek mythology) The most ancient of gods; the personification of the infinity of space preceding creation of the universe
(Physics) A dynamical system that is extremely sensitive to its initial conditions
(chaos (n.d), 2008).
So as you can see it is not evil at all, and we do not believe in harming. We are simply philosophers, experimenters, believers, people seeking truth, and what works best for us spiritually. I know for me I was drawn so much to chaos magic because it is not defined, it is freedom. I came from a strict christian background, one with rules, and guidelines, and if you failed to follow them you were wrong. When I sought to renew my spirituality, and search for others beliefs. I was so drawn to chaos magic because it doesn't have these boundaries. My spirituality is my own, and I can do with it what I want. I can dive deep into my spiritual growth without a medium telling me how to do so. "Nothing is true, everything is permitted."
I hope this helped to shed some light on the matter.
Very well said, Marie Moon. I've been applying the concept of chaos magic to my life as a whole for years now. Essentially, just take what you need and leave the rest.
I don't know where these people are coming up with all this stuff about doom, gloom, and mental institutions.
I don't know much about, but, I have been reading about in a easy way by this book Hands On Chaos Magic by Andrieh Vitimus. There is a "work invented by him", where magicians of all types have to work with their own magic for 30 days, all explained, so, I think you get a good learning from their experiences.
Thank you Psmith88, I just wanted to shed some light on the situation as best as I could. I am still a bit new to chaos magic, but there is definitely a freedom to it. My spirituality is my own, and therefore it is sacred to me.
I swear, the first page of this forum topic just leaves me so utterly flabbergasted. Just because we're on the margins of what the rest of society deems sensible doesn't mean that spreading misinformation willy-nilly is cool.
Just wanted to resurrect this post and add in some more sources someone might be looking for in the matter of Chaos magick. I appreciated Moon's comment on the subject, because this practice is so diverse there is not very many legitimate books dedicated to the topic, and no right way to master this art either, its all in the mind. Not all comment's i can agree with but the motive here is to shed light on an old post. Here are my sources for studying this art:
The Book of Pleasure - By Austin Osman Spare
The Pscychonaut Field Manual- By Arch- Traitor Bluefluke
Part One/Two Sigils, Servitor's, and Godforms- By Marik
