In my english class we watched a re4cording of a Dr Phil show about the use of the "N" word when speaking to african americans. Some said it should not be used at all others said that only black people should be able to use it. What are your views? Do you think that the "N" word should be banned or that it can be used at certain times...or anything else
_NOTE i will Not tolerate people being mean to each other on this forum it is not my intention to anger anyone and i wish that everyone would think with an open mind before they post anything that may be found as demeaning_
i think it should be taken up with the individuals. some, those who mind being called that should not use it themselves, but the ones who do should accept that it is ok for others to also use it.
To say that white people saying the 'N word' is racism, as some believe, is to say that it should not be used by any. If only people of a certain color/heritage can use that word, then it becomes another form of racism.
The 'N word' actually means ignorant, and that word was used on all slaves so many years ago because, sadly, it was true. Ignorant means uneducated/untrained, not stupid or incapable of learning. Back then it was illegal for slaves to know how to read, write, and receive an education, so unless they or their masters ignored the law the slaves were ignorant.
Nowadays the 'N word' isn't used so much for two reasons that I can think of. For one, some people are insulted by it and start fights with people who use it. The other reason is that the 'N word' was a form of slang that is some-what outdated.
Most people who call people ignorant now simply say the word ignorant. In my opinion it makes them sound less red-neck and more educated (or less ignorant, lol) to simply say the word that the 'N word' means.
When I lived in SC it was like that. I think it tends to be more common in the South then the North, but in cities like New York it may be common too. The thing is, and I'm not saying this racistly, it's generally used more by the people who are insulted by white people using it. The people who don't care either way may not appreciate being called that, but they aren't usually about to start a fight over being called that once or twice.
Furthermore, since the 'N word' was practically the name of every black person, it was used allot more often back then even if it doesn't seem that way. What is now mostly a Southern term was once known more nationally. Most people in Washington State, from what I've seen, don't even know what it means. Allot of them think it means 'gangsta'.
Shakespear use the "N" word in one of his plays.. hahahaha.. Anyways, I live in Detroit and the "N" word is use almost in every sentence when talking to some one else. I live in the Ghetto. ^_^ White, latinos, african americans, arabics, ah.. basically everybody use it. There is the exception of the word, you cannot refer to a person who is unknown to you like that. This word is use among acquaintances or friends... unless there is a misunderstanding and a fight will take place. The age is irrelevant as well, except if they already crossed their 60's then it matters... ^_^.
There are 2 different forms of the word. The one with ER is still not appreciated today by most people. It is still used as a word to put down.
The one with an A is a friendlier type of word most times. Vari is right, saying it to people you know is acceptable, saying it to someone you do not is an insult and will cause a lot of trouble. The A version can actually be used to describe a friend or someone you do not like...it's...odd like that.
O_o I uh actually have witness people treating cops like that.. probably because they all ready are acquaintance they react ok with it. But then again, I believe the place I am is just weird.
