black cats

whats the deal with people and black cats i just dont understand why a witch is automatically got to have black cats i mean i have a black cat ( love u star XD) but shes not an evil psychopatic cat (lol)

I believe the aversion to black cats comes from the idea that a witches' familiar takes the form of a black animal, usually a cat but sometimes a toad, dog or hare. Thus be wary of a black cat for it might be a spirit in disguise.

There is also an idea that when the Heathen lands were Christianised, the cats that pulled the goddess Freya's charriot were demonised. This may just be speculation of course and I'd tend to go for the familiar theory foremost.

I have to agree with Vixiana here on the familiar part. I'd have to add though that it was really more because of Christianity taking hold the cat in general was really demonized as it used to be pretty common knowledge that they were dwellers between worlds. Of course because it says in the bible though that spirits once passed on can't communicate with the living (which is a load of crap to say the least) that it has to be a demon, then logic dictates that they would associate it with the one animal that would be able to pass back and forth. Anyways, you should really see about what you can find on your own and check back with us. I think this would make something very fun to learn in here, since it does relate to familiars.

Well I dont think if you're a witch you need to have a black cat, To be honest I really dont like cats...except wild cats like tigers etc that kind I do like Lol! but as for the domestic cat I dont like them(thinks its cause a white cat scratched me when i was 8 years old)...sometimes I wonder if my dog is a familiar so to speak..she actually acts like a cat sometimes and she tests my patience no end she is not a easy dog Lol....I ended up with her because no one else could put up with her weird behaviour Lol!

I think that familiars have become confused with totems and spirit animals over the years, mostly due to the growing interest in shamanism. An animal spirit is a type of guardian and guide, usually in the Otherworld, and is an actual spiritual animal.

A familiar is a spirit being that aids the witch in magical workings, usually in exchange for being fed which most often takes the form of a witch 'suckling' his or her familiar with their own blood, most often from a cut finger.

A familiar would either just appear to the witch while he or she was going about their daily life, or be gifted to them by a family member or another more powerful spirit. It can take any shape it wishes and most often appears as a animal, such as a cat, hare, weasel, toad or dog and is frequently black in colour, although they are not spirit animals which is where the confusion comes from. Familiars also appear as small men or women, also sometimes black.
