This was posted Mar 28th 2011 06:00 PM but it says that she has been trying to get her job back since 2009. The TSA claims they didn't fire her because of her religion but in some past testimonies shines some light that maybe they did fired her because she was indeed a Wiccan.
You see she was the best at her job, which was finding drugs and weapons. The troubles came by when one of her co-workers found out she was a "Witch" and claims she put a hex on him/her. That is how it got started and it went on from there until she was fired from her job.
For more info, please read on the link above the post.
i saw the video. I can't believe she was treated like that just for being Wiccan. It's illegal to fire someone because of their religion and I can't believe the court didn't do anything about it.
It is really hard to show proof that someone got fired because of their religion. If they gave another reason why they fired her then the court cannot do anything. Also since it has been 2 years the trail is cold and any eyewitness would surely come by short. But since there is a news fee on the subject she might have a better chance in court. But we all know that the news does lie in some of their stories so they are not fully reliable in the courtroom.
I am not saying there is no case, but it is hard to win against something like this.
This is why I say nothing about religion to employers. If asked, I say I'm not religious. When I want a sabbat off, I call in sick or say I'm going out of town. It is nearly impossible to prove any discrimination. Employers who want you gone will wait for you to mess up just once or will set you up for failure.
Now they even make you sign something that states they don't need a reason to let you go when you're hired. It gives absolutely no sense of job security. I always keep a small savings on the side enough to last me at least three months with no income.
If you're in America in this economy, you'll want at least six months of funds saved up. People keep trying to say that the recession is over when it is not.
haven't read the article yet, will a little later when i have time. i have a few friends who have been descriminated for being a witch. one is an online friend [i know, online, hear me out] well, she had mentioned to me once or twice how she was being bugged at work by someone putting pamphlets in her locker about christianity. the only person at work who knew was her boss, a very religious christian woman. then one day her boss fired her without any real reason. there was no proof, so she didn't seek legal action. but it happens is my point, though it's never happened to me, i have MANY friends who have been discriminated against. personally i fear a guy at my work might do something, when my boss asked me about my beliefs, i said Wiccan, and the guy i worked with kept saying it was the same as satanism.
I have never been unemployed for more than 1 month. I'm not picky with job choices. People who remain unemployed are those who won't buckle and take a job at Mcdonalds (after being laid off from a white collar position) until they can find a better job. You can't go to places with computers for applications, small chains and independent or family owned businesses are best because you can talk face to face with your employer.
Even though I will always try for the best jobs first. I have waitress experience from years past, so my last resort is to stop off at restaurants. Then I search for employment that suits my career choice. I actually have past employers from restaurants asking if I'm returning to them, but I decline because I have a good job I'm happy with. If I was to be laid off or discriminated against or harrassed in my current employment, I'll be hired on the spot at my past restaurant "safety nets". I always give them two weeks notice, and end it on good note when I leave to a better job.
But back to the topic at hand!
I think religion, and personal life in general should never be brought to the workplace. My co-workers and employers know I am a mother (I can't help to be a proud mom) and happily married. End of my life's story! In my experience, when somone brings their personal life into the workplace, people revert to the behavior of children! Rumors and insults fly around and the next thing you know, that person is fired.
Becoming apart of a business is like walking into someone's home, you need to know your boundaries and keep things as pleasant and comfortable as possible. An upbeat work environment is something you don't dread going to everyday, regardless of dull or difficult tasks. Beliefs are a very personal thing, and one people take very much to heart. People have killed in the name of religion. It isn't suprising that people will also quit or be fired for it too.
If we should keep our religion to ourselves is our own plans. With this topic one idea won't be right for everyone. Some people really do want others to be in their lives while others live multiple lives for different people.
This is like with the Gays, some want to come out of the closet (even if others will hate them or fire them). The army has even accepted the Gays and removed the "Don't asked don't tell" policy.
Even in England, they passed a Act where you can shout you're a witch. They are becoming more accepting even with all the other old Witch Acts they had in the past.
If this women was indeed got fired because the public at your workspace got the knowledge she was into witchcraft, then it is against the law and is wrong. Even if she told people or had tattoos.
