working with a new deity

I want to begin working with ganesh. Where would I begin with that? Prayers, rituals, offerings? I am very low on materials and don't know where to start

Well,you got a good one to explain :p I am a Hindu,as such,i work with vast hindu deities :)
Ganesh is a Hindu God of prosperity.He is often pictured with a large belly,as he loves eating.Ganesh is prayed before doing any work to achieve success and prosperity.He is to be worshipped first of all than any other Hindu deity,that is why people worship him on the 1st of January.
Working with this deity is simple.You may give offerings of sweets which is called 'laddu' in Hindi.Meditating and praying him is a best way to connect with him.Also,a picture or idol of him will help in concentration more.You may pray him early in the morning for a successful day.You may also worship him for success in spell casting and magickal workings.

Also,you may burn incense.Applying red powder to the picture or idol and then applying from that picture or idol to your forehead is a good sign of devotion.You may google for some songs dedicated in worshipping Lord Ganesha.Also,don't forget to google for the recipe of 'laddu'.
You may also research more on him to know about him better.He is the son of one of the Tridevs-Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

You should research Ganesh, find what he likes, his mythology, any religious correlations, ect. In my experiences deities find it more respectful if you put in the effort to learn about them to work with them more properly. After the research, you should know what things you need to work with him, as well as substitutions you would be able to use.
