What type of alter uses bones? Like animal skulls etc.

ones that deal with necromancy, and honest cant really say about others, would have to do more research. but necromancy is a given.

Depends on the animal.

I have bones from a dog and an gator head on my home altar for protection

What about norse or lokean alters honoring lupine sons?

If you are practicing necromancy i suggest if you are a beginner please becareful necromancy is a very dangerous form of magic.
Depends on what bone you want to use like dog bones are used for protection also cat bones.

I'm not entirely sure where the idea that necromancy is dangerous comes from. It's a fancy name that literally means divination with the dead and now has been added to simply working with the dead.

Working with the dead is something that is done in countless traditions across the globe. The only danger comes when people go playing with dead folks they don't know, don't know how to work with or have no business working with.

If you're wanting to make an altar more Loki/Fenrir oriented you could use coyote skull bones, wolf teeth or claws if you have any, a wolf pelt or coyote pelt, etc. Loki could turn into several animals, so you could use a variety of bones from them. Bird bones, such as that of a bird of prey (though be careful of laws such as the Migratory Bird Act which prevents the taking of some bird bones), horse hair, horse bones, etc.

I will keep that in mind personified. I saw something similar and didnt get a chance to ask or it coulda been mine. Too bad its gone now. Oh well, everything happens for a reason. I now know for next time.

I use bones in my practice of necromancy, although it's more commonly called "ancestor worship". I also use them as a representation to death and the life force.

i agree wit conjurelady working with the dead is found in many religions any form of magic can be dangerous if taken lightly necromancy is no more dangerous then high ceremonial magic working with angels if done by someone who doesn't know what they are doing its dangerous
