By this forum, I am guessing your are new to magick, you need to start from the beginning this means studying what magick is, and how it works,..etc.

Study before casting. Look into energy work as well as how/why spells work. You don't need a protection spell but you should cast a circle to protect you and the ground will be surrounded by energy. The circle is a holy space where you can be protected but also where spells and rituals are performed. While not everyone casts a circle before a spell, it will help.
